octane preferences

Post by Tumu Rock » Wed May 17, 2000 3:49 am

Just curious what octanes fellow listers are using. I currently use 93 since the difference of $0.20 a gallon (from 87 to 93) works out to only about $1 more per tank. I just assume higher octane is better but maybe I'm wasting a buck a tank? dat brooklyn bum _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp

octane preferences

Bum, Page 29 of the '95 A9 owner's manual has the following minimum ratings: antiknock index: 87 (RON + MON) / 2 RON research octane #: 91 MON= Motor Octane Number My unscientic octane test is to ride up a moderate hill & lug the engine by being 1 or 2 gears higher than I should and crack the throttle open. If I hear "marbles" rattling around in my engine, I know that I need a higher octane fuel. My results: standard octane (87) doesn't cut it, mid-grade might be ok, & premium=no problem. Other bikes I have owned did not "like" premium and ran better with a lower grade. It's possible to have pre-ignition or detonation and not be able to hear it over the wind/road noise. Gee, I wonder if we'll have a "gas thread" just like the oil type/level discussions ... if so, we know who to blame! Professor A9 Federal Way, Wa. [USA] ps: a proper spark plug reading is the ultimate proof for me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ --- Tumu Rock wrote:
