Don't know if any of you heard this, but I heard on the radio the other night that Scotchguard water repellent is going to be banned soon. I guess the reason is that it gives off ozone depleting hydrocarbons or something or other. 3M is going to be discontinuing it worldwide, too, according to the news story I heard. All those with Aerostitiches better buy a good supply of it soon! Never thought Campdry worked as good as Scotchguard. [dsn_klr650] scotchguard to be banned!
I heard this in the news too. It's related to environmental as well as medical findings about their "secret ingredient". Apparently they've found trace amounts of it in fish and water supplies, as well as in blood tested from the nation's blood banks. 3M chose to discontinue it because of this. The story I heard said that they were working on a replacement chemical, but in two years they haven't been successful. Like Kevin said, we should buy up what we can find. Marcus Young

RE: [DSN_klr650] Scotchguard to be banned!
Environmental crises are just another tool for the ever-changing field of marketing. A good marketer skilled at adapting to what the public wants to hear can sell any concept. This may be just a rumor: I heard that after Dow Chemical's patent ran out on freon, that many other competitors started to flood the market (with freon). Dow developed a new refrigerant. Currently its use is practically a federal mandate, thus our gov't guarantees a large market for Dow's new product and eliminated the domestic market for freon. "Lucky" for Dow! Anyone know 3M's patent status on water repellants? ULP is no bed of roses, either. Contining known carcinogens like toluene, ULP is no better for washing your hands with than leaded petrol. BTW, does anybody _really_ know what safe levels of diesel emmissions are?
