[dsn_klr650] more on helmets

Maybe someone has mentioned this, but as I've been looking at helmets in
catalogs/websites I've noticed that both of the "flip-face" helmets readily
availible (Nolan N100 and Shoei Syncrotech/Duotech) always have DOT approval
listed in the descriptions, BUT niether one has the SNELL95 approval. The
other helmet models (Shoei at least) described on the same sites/catalogs
show both DOT and Snell approvals in the descriptions. Perhaps this speaks
of a safety issue with the hinged face? Does anyone that has one of these
helmets have the SNELL95 sticker?
Thanks,
Mike Campbell

IMHO, once you get past the DOT and Snell stickers, the biggest
consideration is comfort. And so it doesn't matter if 1000 people recommend
the Nolan or the Shoei, if it doesn't fit your head, it's the wrong helmet.
It seems the manufacturers have a specific head in mind for their products.
IOW, there are Shoei heads and Arai heads, etc. I have a Shoei head. I've
tried Arais and others, but Shoeis fit me better.
After comfort, other considerations are things like noise, weight,
ventilation, etc. The only way to really tell is to go into a shop and try
them on. If you have a good local shop, they may even let you take a test
ride. Now, the dilemma is: should you buy from the shop that has spent the
money on inventory and service to allow you to make a good decision, or do
you go out and buy the helmet mail order for tons less money?

This same thread just came up on another list I'm on. I believe that Snell
hasn't had any of the helmets to test yet. I could very well be wrong. It's
happened before.
I bet that if Snell did approve it, it would be with the 3/4 helmet rating, not
as a full face.

Is a "Moron helmet" some kind of dunce cap?

I believe Snell will not approve any helmet with a flip-up chinbar. Shoei
Duotech is not Snell approved, that's what I own. (leftover model for $100).
BTW I ordered a Snell helmet from JC Whitney for $88 this week. It's just
going to be used as a spare. Probably compares to a 1980s helmet.

Strange. You'd think that Snell could test the flip types with the
same tests as the regular lids, at least.
