Professor- I'm on the digest version and may be late on this, but my understanding is that since the SJ donut on the 15W-50 M1 car oil bottle isn't of the starburst variety, the oil inside has higher levels of anti-wear additives. Darrel A12 (runnin' M1 car oil since first oil change---15K plus miles) Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 16:57:04 -0700 From: Jim Hyman I am going to try SJ rated Mobil 1, 15W-50 automotive oil, hopefully to further improve my "character-enabled" BMW-like tranny. Any further info on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Professor A9 Federal Way, Wa. [USA]

Darrel, The Mobil 1 oil that I purchased is the 'newer' Tri-Synthetic formula (15w-50). The 'donut' on the can has no starburst & says: "API SERVICE SJ/CF" in the upper donut ring & "SAE 15W-50" in the donut's center. The back of the oil container says "Exceeds API SERVICE SJ,SH/CF warranty requirements for gas for gasoline and diesel ..." I'm not familiar with the starburst emblem or its significance. Hopefully, Skip can shed some light on the matter. What weight of Mobil 1 have you been running for 15K miles? Does your tranny have any false neutrals? Any problems with balky upshifts or downshifts? What is the meaning of life? Professor A9 Federal Way, Wa. Hey Jim in LA! What shop slipped that $3900 figure out? I will be ready to hit a shop cash in hand in about 2 weeks. So far, nobody seems interested in letting me have one for less than $6000 out-the-door. The yo-yo of the week award goes to Glen at Chaparral for making me pry an out-the-door price out of him, making me pry the prep and freight numbers out of him, refusing to let me copy the numbers down, and tacking on a $65 doc prep fee. Out-the-door price was over $6200. To top it off, my SO asked him to check on the stock status of a YZF600R and he disappeared and didn't return. We tracked him down and found him standing around with his thumb up his a__, oblivious to the world around him. I guess when you're one of only a handful of shops open on Sunday, you can afford to be non-competitive. RM
