I would like to hear the opinions of the experienced
riders in this group concerning their reasons for
choosing the helmet(s) that they now own. I will be
purchasing a helmet soon and have my selection
narrowed to the Nolan F-100 or the Shoei RF-800 so any
comments on these two (or recommendations on others)
would be appreciated. Once I know my helmet size I
would like to order it from a wholesaler, does anyone
have good sources that they would like to recommend?
Thanks,
Brad Davis
A?? (I don t have my KLR yet)

I agree with Kurt. I have an N100 also and must say it is an exceptional
value. Very comfortable to boot. For off-road riding, I use an HCJ open face
and goggles.

As the result of the endorsement by both the dean and assistant dean of
DualSport (you pick who is who) I too have just purchased a Nolan N100. I
had the good fortune to by traveling and stopped by Venture Motorsports (BMW)
in B'ham, AL. They had a bunch of helmets. I liked the Shoei Synchotech but
at $400 did not give it much consideration. The N100 Large fit very nice on
my Knot head but loose around the cheeks/ears. The Med. fit just right
around my face and just a tad sung on my Knot head. The very kind salesman
said due to my Knot that I should go with the Med. size and said it would
loosen up as it breaks in.
Break-in was 150 miles of pure torture. The sung fit turned into Excedrin
headache #77. Do you know how it feels when your gear ain't just right.
Jacket collar rubbing your neck, mustache itching, underwear creeping up,
helmet too tight, etc. First, I tried deforming the hard foam headliner with
my hand. No good. Next, I pulled back the cloth/foam headliner and got out
my trusty Barlow and shaved 1.5mm off the offending Knot interference. Felt
much better, but after several more miles, Knot head start to throb again.
Off come the skid lid and an additional 1.743mm are removed. Perfect. And
the moral of the story; Choose the fit carefully and mention the mail order
price. Give the "local dealer" a shot at getting your cycle dollars. $187
out the door - White, Knot happy.
Knot - who's head is not of uniform shape or density.
ps: Knot's other helmets shoei X-9 full face- very very good, shoei RJ??
open face - very good. Nolan N100 - good, but the N100 is now my favorite
due to its versatility and custom fit. Could the N100 be the KLR of helmets?
