There are many options for loading routes into a GPS. Some will
choose the roads for you. They get you the quickest route etc. They
choose the major routes and arterials which to me is useless because
if it's that direct, I'm not riding my motorcycle, and for that I
need no help (compassion maybe, but not help).
However, and this is a BIG however....
If you end up with a Garmin, such as III+, eMap or StreetPilot, then
you will undoubtedly be buying at lease one Garmin Mapsource software
CD. The Garmin Mapsource is the ONLY way to put MAPS into the GPS,
and it will also load routes, waypoints, and tracklogs into the GPS.
For most KLRists, I'd recommend the US Roads and Rec CD (G10215-0)
which has virtually all the roads in the US, including gravel and
dirt. I was on a cowtrail once, in the WA desert, and it showed up
on my GPS . It evidently was a road once but now is overgrown (
kinda straight for a cow trail).
