Also I'm coming up on a valve adjustment. The dealer wants $50 plus parts. Is this a good deal? If you can answer "no" to those to questions, it probably doesn't matter whether you use SJ oil or not, provided that your choice of viscosity range is proper and oil changes occur every 3,000 ~ 5,000 miles. With all due respect, folx, KLR 650's don't fall in either category. .............................................................>snip Tom Bowman Atlanta A14   Tom,     I agree with everything you say and have stated them all before on this List,EXCEPT you are incorrect in what the base concerns are by bike manufacturers,mechanics and other informed and interested parties, that being the clutch slippage problem attributed to SJ auto oils, due solely to the friction modifiers added.    The stress levels in a single cylinder motorcycle transmission at highway speeds are definately enough to warrant concern, especially on the KLR.     Also, not all SJ oils have the reduced levels of the zinc and phosporous content, as of this past year. I was going to post later some new interesting information I got yesterday from two different petroleum engineers employed by Citgo ( Kawasaki oil, Yamalube, and Suzuki oil) and Shell. Apparently the SJ situation is enough of a problem for them to inact measures to address it. Also, two bike manufacturers have made comments to these two oil companies that they were considering notifying warranted customers that they recommend against using SJ auto oil in their products, and are considering voiding warranties if done. Therefore, the situation is being taken a little more seriously than you think.      That being said, the lubrication information I have posted in the past, and will continue to post, is done purely as information only, not advice, unless otherwise stated. My interests and education on petroleum and lubrication is persued as part of my profression and I have several years of it, with no  " theories" or speculation taken as fact. As an off-shoot, I have included the revelancy of it pertaining to motorcycle engines and just pass along the information to this List for those interested. I get my facts and information from industry engineers, corporate and independent and from seminars I attend. Much is also gotten from SAE monos and reports, not poorly researched and undocumented magazines and internet articles based on Joe Blow`s  opinion on the subject.
