...And they are getting even smaller these days.
The latest sport bikes these days have a little coil built into each
plug cap.

I have no evidence that the stock CDI/coil system is inadequate but
I'm willing to listen.
A different or bigger coil may draw more current from the CDI which
may or may not be able to handle it.

Can't help there, my 600 has never had any problems with water on the
spark, all stock bits too.
