certainly it's your money, but even though my parents could afford it (dad
and stepdad both experienced computer programmers) i managed to put myself
through college without using their money, and without taking out student
loans, and even managed to buy a house while i was there. there were times
when i felt a little crazy for a while (taking 2 abstract math classes plus
2 easy GE classes while working 35 hrs/wk, and racing mountain bikes every
weekend), but i always felt like i was in control of my own destiny, and i
cherish that independence.
plus it gives me some of that self-righteous parental leverage to deny my
son money for beer and books while i buy new motorcycle trinkets (hahaha).
