can't find any simple procedures for adjusting the chain correctly. I've had this bike for a year now and the chain is finally getting too loose. Just wondering what is the simplest way to adjust the chain slack. I don't really understand the procedure they state in the manual. Thanks, in advance Gord 1984 KLR 600> This may sound stupid. chain adjustment on klr600
Gord,
The following information comes from the KLR600 service manual:
1) Rotate the rear wheel to find the place where the chain is
TIGHTEST (due to uneven chain wear).
2) Measure the vertical movement of the chain midway between the
sprockets.
3) Adjust the chain so that there is 40-45mm (1-1/2" to 2")
free-play (when you lightly push down, then up at the chain's
midpoint).
Additonal notes:
a) Loosen the left & right chain adjuster clamp bolts. (These
are the pair of vertical bolts on each side of the swingarm).
b) Insert the wrench into the rear axle head, and turn the chain
adjusters forward or rearward until the drive chain has the
correct amount of chain slack.
c) Re-tighten the chain adjuster clamp bolts & the rear axle nut.
d) Verify that the sprocket alignment is proper by using the
notches on each circular chain adjuster. (Double-check with
a visual sighting along the top of the chain from the
rear sprocket to the counter-shaft sprocket).
Don't worry if the proper chain slack seems to be excessive,
a chain is at it's tighest when the tranny output shaft,
swingarm pivot, & rear axle are inline. Chains have more
slack when the rear axle is above or below this straight
line.
