choke cable

Dave, It sounds like you there is a problem with the enricher cable & possibly the mounting of the enricher (choke). I disconnected the cable at the handlebar end of my A9 & measured how much the inner cable extended beyond the outer cable housing, about 1". When properly adjusted (at the handlebar end), the outer cable should have 1/8" play (with a light pull). My cable adjuster is near the minimal setting to get the proper free-play. The maximum free-play adjustment range is about 1/2". I mention this because if your's is not inline with these figures, this could be part of the problem. You appear to have a minor 'lean' condition, which could cause the rough idle & backfire. If the enricher was not properly installed, there may be a minor air leak causing these problems. Remove & re-install the enricher & see if this clears up the problem. The low-speed pilot air screw should be about 2 turns out from the fully seated position. If the factory plug is covering the air screw, it probably has not been changed. The air screw is on the bottom of the carb, behind the float bowl, on the carb's underside, directly above the starter motor. If the air screw is accessible (ie, the plug is removed), lightly turn the screw (clockwise, as viewed from below) until the screw is seated lightly & then back it out 2 full turns. (NOTE: be sure to count how many turns it takes to seat the screw.) This should put you in the ballbark for the idle mixture setting. If you're not familiar with your carb, go to: http://www.dualsport.org/ click on the KLR650 logo, go to the bottom of the page & click on the 'Keihin CVK40 - A complete and comprehensive Carburetor Primer' link. Good luck, let us know how you make out. Professor '95 KLR650 A9 Federal Way, Wa. [USA] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

provided. Too bad I forgot to do it, though (doughhhh!). Anyway, that minor detail aside, I got everything back together and the choke (enricher) cable is working fine. The only problem is, I think the carb was tuned with the cable frozen and the enricher slightly engaged. Now that I have a working cable, the bike's not idling as well. To keep it from stalling, I had to set up the idle a bit. I also noticed some minor backfiring which seems to subside if I run with the choke slightly on. The cable adjustement at the lever is almost all the way out, so I have nowhere to go there.
