[dsn_klr650] klr feedback to newbie lurker

hi mikey. i don't know much, but the klr works pretty well as a general purpose commuting bike. i ride 50 miles round trip (60 if i take the freeway), and the klr handles it great. it's kind of a pig in dirt (at least compared to my wife's xt225) , but light and nimble on the street. i get around 55-60 mpg in general commuting and light dirtroad exploring. i've also been using it to take my wife dirt biking and the extra heft of the klr keeps me from taking her on trails beyond her ability. i've only had mine 4 months, but i've already put 5000 miles of dirt, commute, tour, camp and play miles on it, and i can't imagine a better choice, except maybe 2 or 3 more narrow-purpose bikes. -mark weaver

I'm one of the guys that uses mine on long trips. 500 mile days, no problem. If you install the lowering links the handling will change; it'll feel like the enduros of your long lost youth. Bogdan

Wow, that would be quite a switch. I think the KLR is one of the few motorcycles that can stand on it's own merits as a tried true motorcycle. I refer to it as a blue collar bike, not exactly pretty but it gets the job done. It's okay in dirt, but can get to be a real handful, pretty good on the street and highway. It does a lot of things, but nothing exceptionally well. I tour, commute and dual sport on it. Would you sell the Harley or keep it? I'm not sure of your situation, but selling the FX and buying a KLR might be a bit of a shock and take some adjusting. Gino
