30k valve check

Post by Bogdan Swider » Tue May 02, 2000 12:12 pm

Don't know if anybody cares but I had a busy weekend. Changed the oil, removed and reinstalled my shock with its new spring and managed to pester good hearted Ca-nookie, Arne + the list in general with a drunken post. In the mist of this I checked my valves. Some may call me anal-compulsive but 30k is a nice round number, also the last check was at 18.5k (better specify miles for you victims of the Trudeau and PRI fascist tyrannies). Last time I had to change three shims but this time, as Mark reported a couple of days ago..cool! One intake and one exhaust tightened .001" That left me with a loose .006" and a tight .006" in the intakes and .008" in both exhausts. "Just right" to quote Goldilocks. My new $30 1/4" Harbour Freight torque wrench performed O.K. but I was glad I fooled around with it a bit before applying it to the sensitive valve cover bolts. The click is not very audible or palpable near the end of a short stroke in a tight area.
