I can offer my view of using the dry bags with Tims std rack for the KLR on the last trip to Mex. I liked that the racks offered protection in a fall to the bike, tho I did not put it to the test. Nice to have the rack to have the bags rest on. I did not try the bags without the racks tho. With all the weight I had in the bags I suggest that the racks are the way to go to handle the forces against the plastic side covers, with out them the covers would take abeating and prolly the bags might flop around more. We did some d/s rides over rough ground and rocky two track that had things bouncing quite abit.
