[dsn_klr650] more gas 4 robert

Post by Robert Morgan » Mon Apr 17, 2000 9:51 pm

When I checked my bike it had 2k on it and was totally stock.  At idle it ran .45 CO 60 PPM HC; 2500 rpm.07 CO 26 ppm HC; at 5000 .02 CO 6 ppm HC.  The gas analyzer at my work broke not long after this and they did not get it repaired so I don't have any current data.  All I have done to my bike is adjust the pilot screw out about a half a turn.  I think these readings are on the lean side personally.  As you start to increase the air fuel mixture (CO) watch the HC numbers.  As soon as they start to climb you are no longer burning the fuel completely, hence the rise in ppm's of HC (unburned fuel).  At this point you are just wasting gas.  Obviously your mileage will start to drop as soon as you start to fatten the mixture up but you will reach a sweet spot where you will get the most bang for the buck and the best mileage for the best power.  Engine temp will drop as well, lean engines run hotter.  When I used to set up VW's to run best (not necessarily to pass smog) I set them at about 2.5 CO.  If I could get the HC's below 200 I was happy.  You might search "stoichiometric equilibrium" in the searchable archives.  We talked about this a while back.  It's a great excersize, keep me posted on the results.
