Thanks for the thorough explainations/experiences. I have my chain
adjusted to the loose end of the spec. now. I'm going to make-it a habit to
check the slack often, with me and whatever load I'm carrying on the bike.
Having 9 inches of travel certainly changes the game compared to my
streetbikes.
FWIW, the 600 manual suggests increasing slack by 5mm in "wet and muddy
conditions" because "mud sticks to the chain and sprockets resulting in an
overly tight chain, and the chain may break." The 650 supplement does not say
this, although the spec is already 5mm higher than the 600. In both cases,
the manual disallows going below the lower end of the spec, but allows going
5mm over the higher end.
