I've run them, the last two or three sets.  I like 'em.  They are good for fast pavement riding (I'm sure someone will disagree) and when they do start to slide they are quite predictable.  I'm just about ready to replace the rear one, I put it on last summer and rode it up to Idaho on highway, then around the state's wilderness areas on dirt, then home, and I've been riding it to work and taking it out in the boonies on weekends.  It's got an even five thou on it and is getting a little bald in the middle.  They are pretty nice in the dirt too, for a 50 50 tire.

I give 'em the seal of approval, and I'm going to keep running them.  I am not a lover of Gripsters. Too pricey, not enough sticky, and no knobs.   ----- Original Message -----   From: R. Kaub   To: dsn_klr650@egroups.com   Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2000 7:56 AM   Subject: [DSN_klr650] Tire

Has anyone got any experience with the Cheng Shin/Maxxis M6006 dual sport   tires.   They look like a very capable 50/50 tire and are "s" speed rated.   The price, about US$70.00 delivered, is attractive for a rear tire.   I know that there may be some resistance to the name which once meant a   cheap tire.  But I have had Cheng Shin tires in the past with no problems   and have never heard of any disasters involving the brand.  Whaddaya think?   Thanks.   Bob Kaub

Check out       www.tireclearance.com

Are the prices ok?? I have not had to buy new tires yet..  But I did need some advice of what kind of tires I should buy.  I commute 140 miles a day to work. Freeway.. BUT, I also ride powerline trails on the weekends, and frequent the desert ( death vally desert )  I don't want a tire that will wear out quick on the road, but I want something that can handle some abuse too.

The number two pencil.  Are you talking about the lead, painted side, or the eraser?

Rub the lead against the rotor, where the pads contact it, on each side.  See how quick your squeak disappears (immediately).  If you do this every week or so, it may cure your brake from that particular squeak.

argh. this morning, my front wheel started making an annoying squeak. i can't tell if it's the brake or the hub, but it's definitely the front wheel revolving that causes it. it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference if the front brake is applied or not (except that the pitch decreases as the bike slows).

anyone else have experience with such a thing, or have an idea of where to start to chase down and eliminate it? mw

gettin ready to buy some new tires, since pretty soon i'll be afraid to ride in the dirt with the stockers. i plan on putting them on myself, just so i can get familiar with it in the privacy of my shed, with beer handy, and a truck to take stuff to the shop in case i'm too clumsy to do it right. once i get them all mounted up, i guess i need to deal with balancing. now i'm not at all convinced that i'm properly equipped to balance wheels, since i don't own any kind of wheel stand or anything. could i jury rig something? or am i better off just letting my local experts do it?

what about slime? i know about its effectiveness (good on small holes, bad on pinches and cuts), but what about the effect on tire balance? does it make balancing unnecessary, or impossible? (note the distinction between these two concepts). i do a fair amount of hwy riding, so i don't want to be bouncy.

Buy the 2001 edition of 'the Milepost' (usually goes on sale around March). It contains a mile-by-mile description of not only the roads in Alaska (there aren't that many) but also the main roads leading up to Dawson Creek, the starting point of the Alaska Highway.

Yes, I went through this just two weeks ago.  There was just enough wear and play in the wheel bearings that the spacer on the left (disc side) of the hub would rub once a revolution causing a squeal.  After replacing the wheel bearings the noise was gone.  BTW, I took the Kawi bearings to my local bearing house where they read the numbers stamped in the side of the old bearings and matched them to US made bearings for a total of $12.50 for both.  Also I got sealed bearings that should be more resistant to water and which won't need repacking.  Hope this helps. Bill, I would go with the master link, easy to remove for cleaning or doing maintenence/alterations with your bike and I've never lost a master link clip in years of street/dual purpose riding. D.I.D. is a good bet and I've had good luck with a couple of RK brand chains. Can someone please tell me the OD of the fork spacer that goes on top of the fork spring? I plan to stop at Home Depot on the way home tonight and buy some 2" pieces of pvc to replace the spacers I made.. I cut them too long and am wondering if this increased preload in the forks is contributing to the negative change in handling I am experiencing.

I I've been using Slime for years without problems. Recently my valve wouldn't accept or release air. I changed valve cores and for a couple of weeks everything was fine. Today I checked air pressure (same tire) and again couldn't get a reading; pressed the core no air would come out, lots of Slime visible in the valve. Went on a ride anyway; so I'm crazy. Preceding the mentioned events, a month (?) ago, this same tire went flat on me. I couldn't find any puncture. Thought maybe the air escaped from the valve so I tightened the core. Could it be that the Slime started to set up because of the presence of air? Is it now too thick for the valve? Any advice appreciated. Bogdan

Go to Motorcycle Online magazine and click on "what's new" and read about how Arai (the helmet people) have sicced the lawyer dogs on a BMW (non-factory) site for providing a link to the Arai site. If you own an Arai helmet or are considering owning one, you might want to reconsider. The lawyer dog who wrote the letter, which threatened punishments most brutal, then had the balls to sign himself "very truly yours". Ya gotta love it. Thanks.
