WD-40 to clean off the grit, and a misting of Motorex 622 synthetic made in Switzerland (have you seen the women there?). 21K miles on my first chain and now with nearly 11K on my second set up with a master link too, and no problemos. I'm amazed at the number of riders who still think WD will destroy the O-rings, pshaw. By the way update your chain sliders with the ones from dirtly, mucho mo betta. --Jim A-15

The people who make chain wax have a new silicone based chain lube. On my first can, but I like the way it stays on the chain. http://www.maximausa.com/products/chainlubes/chainguard.asp R -----Original Message----- From: Jim [mailto:mah78@...] Sent: Thursday, February 17, 2005 10:56 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: chain lube WD-40 to clean off the grit, and a misting of Motorex 622 synthetic made in Switzerland (have you seen the women there?). 21K miles on my first chain and now with nearly 11K on my second set up with a master link too, and no problemos. Listers, I've been doing a lot of old shaft drive motorcycling in the last few years but I "think" I know just a little something about chains. At least I did in the 70s. : ) Back then we didn't have o-ring chains. Just nice simple chains that required chain lube to keep the inside of the rollers lubed. I used 90 weight gear oil in an oil can that was hose clamped to the frame of my Suzuki TS-185. It had a hose from the nozzle to the chain and only took a quick push on the plunger every now and then to keep the chain lubed. The way I understand o-ring chains to work is a bit different from the non o-ring chains. The purpose of the o-ring is to keep the factory lube in the chain and keep everything else out of the chain innards. Now the reason to lube a chain isn't to lube the inside of the rollers but to keep the o-rings in good shape. Take care of the o-rings and the chain will be fine. Let an o-ring get damaged and you're back to the "old" style chains. At least that's how I understand it to work. I use white lithium grease in a spray can from WalMart to coat the o-rings on my chain after I clean it with a bunch of WD-40. The white lithium in a spray can comes out like a liquid and quickly turns to a foamy grease. It really covers the o-rings well. Used it on the Great Divide Ride last summer when I felt like taking the time. Mostly I mooched WD-40 from Steve and just kept the o-rings clean. Had no chain stretch for the entire trip. The only time I needed to adjust the chain was at the Canadian border when I put a 14 tooth front sprocket on and then in Silver City NM at the end of the dirt when I put a 16 tooth sprocket back on. I was running a 46 tooth rear sprocket so the 16 tooth kept me with in 0.3% of the stock ratio. I think proper chain tension is more important than what you're using for chain lube. I almost wrote this exact same statment in my post on this subject. While it it IS very very important to do proper adjusments, and most riders just don't do them, I think that using a sticky substance on your chain in the dirt is way bad new too. I would have to say that if everyone spent as much time learning how to adjust their chains perfectly, checked them regularly, and actually practiced what they learned as much as they "talk about chain lubes" they would learn a whole lot. Dumonde Tech BHP chain lube. Started using about 3000 miles ago on the recommendation of a friend. It quieted my 12K chain down, freed up the sticky links and doesn't attract dirt. It is based on a plastic carrier as opposed to the wax carrier most use. It dries to a base that coats the chain, but is not tacky. Cheap too. West

Out of curiousity mostly . . . has anyone ever used (or even seen) the D.I.D. chain lube that they mention on their site? WEST HOVLAND wrote: Dumonde Tech BHP chain lube. I got so confused by it all that I removed my chain, parked the KLR in front of the TV and watch NASCAR while sitting on it. BTW, open all the windows if idling in the living room for more than 2 hours... the headaches are KilLeR. Anyone want to buy all my riding gear? West
