I have the Dual Star tank bag (DSTB) and like it a lot. I haven't tried others b/c I'm delighted. The bag has seen combat and delivered, so why mess with perfection? The Wolfman guy lives pretty close to me, so I wouldn't hesitate to try his products. I have his tank panniers and love using those for storing extra water in the desert or need more room riding 2-up. But Like Jeff said...with most bags you have to unclip something to refill and it's "there" when you're off road. My DSTB doesn't bother me a bit off-road and I'm not bashful riding the hairiest of hairy...rocks to deep sand. I'd have to see the Wolfman before going that route at this point, but as for quality, the guy is good! It all comes down to pockets, size, color, etc. I like the velco map case and rain cover. You put the rain cover on and then your map case on top when it's raining. Otherwise, it just velcros right on top of the bag itself. Stuff like this is important to me. Now, I had to modify the front attachment a bit b/c I have the Flying Fortress 7 gal tank (yes, I measured mine in the bathtub at 6.95 gals....cricky!) and it's different than the steel tank. Not difficult to do but it's not plug and play. Maybe Wolfman is easier here (Jeff?)? The DSTB is expandible and has plenty of pockets, it's my recommendation.

Steve - Get a Dual Star bag. If you have the metal tank, it's plug and play. The bag rocks. It's flat on top, expandible and is really functional. I recommend the expedition rain cover. Again, Wolfman makes quality items, but this bag is a #1 item on my list...period. I have a Garmin GPS and simply rest the remote control with velcro on the bag's section velcro closest to the handlebars. I can send you some pics if it helps. Maybe so. But why then is his latest bag "new and improved? DS doesn't need to touch perfection. The only mod it needs is quick adapt to plastic tank. Does WM come in red? WM is quality but DS is my recommendation. I'd like to ride with a WM to test it out, but I'm 100% delighted with the DS. I like the velcro near the handlebars (on top) and the elastic holders that I can slide in a pen, map light or other things. It works very well for me. There are a lot of things "like" but unless it says DS, it's not the same bag. Check the Moto Fizz All Weather #9103 at Aerostitch. It really is waterproof, 3 weeks on the ride to Prudhoe and 2 weeks in the Canadian Maritimes proved it to me and the magnetic base is great. Drawback it that it is designed for a flatter topped tank so it slopes back and comprimises the usability of space. Don M

My guess is it's easier as the Explorer uses fastex type quick disconnects front and rear. It takes me maybe 10 seconds to undo my bag for fueling and doesn't ever seem to be an issue for me. I've also set up my Wolfman panniers with quick disconnects even though they almost never come off the bike. I don't care for the mounting of the Dual-Star panniers using metal clips on the tank shrouds. But, they probably work well. I took a look at the Dual-Star site and it looks to me like the Wolfman Explorer and the KLR specific Dual-Star bag are very close in design. Somebody maybe copied something that worked real well here??? hmmmmmmm Yes, both are expandable, have pockets galore, good fastening systems, nicely thought out rain covers and elastic loops to hold stuff. Well, the D/S has two loops it looks like and the Explorer has one for a pen or flashlight. The Explorer rain cover is similar to the D/S rain cover with velcro on the inside to hold it to the bag and velcro on the outside to hold the map case. I remember commenting about it when I first got it that it was the best rain cover design I'd ever encountered. It still is. I saw the Dual Star review stated the D/S map case fit all the maps tried while others don't fit most. Or something similar to that. Well, I've got a few maps I bet don't fit in the D/S map case. : ) But every time I need to put a map in my Explorer map case I can fold it up to a size that fits. : ) Yeah, if I was gonna change something on the Explorer it would be the map case would be larger so to take a "normal" map worth of one length up and two folds sideways. I just measured the Black Hills National Forest Travel Management map and that would make the map case at least 11" tall and 8" wide. I'd add 1/2" to each side just for some wiggle room. And heck, if I was able to change one thing I might as well be allowed to change two things. So, the other thing I'd do is figure out a mounting system to put it on as a tail bag. Then when off roading locally I could quickly put it on the back rack and still have all my junk with me. When touring like on De Tour it could stay on the tank. Yes, I want my cake and to eat it too. : ) One thing I did notice about the D/S bag. It looks like it's back over the seat just like my Explorer. I bet a guy would have the same issues with either bag when on the pegs. Maybe it's time for me to look at the Explorer Lite? Nope, I don't think that would hold the junk I want with the bike all the time. This morning it was 20 degrees out and I was glad to have the size of the Explorer to hold gloves, a spare handkerchief, Kleenex and chap stick on top of my normal supply of tools and junk. That ride got aborted from 80 miles to about 30 but was still pretty good. I'm a big fan of JC Whitney - as long as you know what you're buying. I bought their magnetic tank bag (great), soft tail bag (OK) and saddle bags (suck) and their hard tail case (great value for the price versus something like Givi). The magnetic tank back is great - fits the tank well and sticks like glue (very powerful magnets), holds a lot of stuff, map viewing is good, no need to move anything to gas up and its cheap relative to other models. I've heard the Kaw tail bag is OK if you don't like hard cases. Personally, I like the ability to lock things up around the city. If you don't do hardcore off-road, I use the JCW velcro throttle rocker on long trips. My next gift to myself is the strap-on gel seat (sounds kinda kinky). Bob '06 Red KLR 650

The DS is a nice enough bag, but the harness does not work well with a Corbin seat. Even if the DS bag were clearly superior, DS is a pain to deal with, and I understand they are no longer selling the bag anyway. In contrast, Eric Hougen is a pleasure to deal with. He backs up his product and supports the sport by coming to events like CMC and donating his products for door prizes. In any event,my own choice is the KTM LC4/Duke bag.

OMG! What's the deal? Why no more Dual-Star tank bag? Yes, I notice it on their website. I'm going to call them tomorrow. Admittedly, the mounting straps/clips/grabs might have to be altered depending on your mods. I have a plastic tank so I fabbed some new clips and my girlfriend restitched them. It works like a dream. Also the clips that go under the seat were modified in a similar fashion. They are a PITA to remove without a little seat-tongue bendage, but I chalk this up to my first line of defense in anti-theft...ha ha. Try tilting/pulling hard to one side and unclip...repeat other side. Removing your bowling ball before mounting it helps, too! If this is the case, I'd go to Wolfman. He's like 10 minutes from my house. I'm interested in his nerf bar bags anyway.
