valve adjustment

Post by eblansfield » Wed May 21, 2003 8:27 pm

Need some expert oppinions. I received my shims from Fred today and did my valve adjustment. When I put it back together, I rechecked the valve clearances and found that my LI is .001 over the max specification. The new valve clearances are below. RI = .008 LI = .009 RE = .010 LE = .010 Do you think I should worry about the LI being .001 over or should I take it apart and adjust it again? Appreciate your help. Earl A16

This will not hurt your engine and will just allow you to go longer between the next shim change. Don't worry about it. Mark Sampson www.bigdogadventure.com

I don't know how many miles are on the bike. If it's less than 5k or so, your valves will tighten up and you won't have to live with the extra noise for long. If I had 10k on mine, I would adjust closer to mid to keep the motor from scaring off the deer I'm trying to poach! --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Mark Sampson" wrote:

Thanks for everyones advice. I only have 700 miles on my bike and everyone says the valves will tighten up themselves, so I am going to leave and get back to riding. Thanks again for you help. Earl A16 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

All the big dogs say they tighten up, so I take that as truth. About the only thing you might hear would be some tapping from the valve, but nothing can rattle and humm like that old KZ400 I had, adjust to spec, and 200 miles later it was a tap dancing fool. An unsure who said it, but "A tappy valve is a happy valve" Dooden

valve adjustment

Post by piker650 » Thu Jun 05, 2003 12:03 pm

Hey guys, Been a while since I posted to the list. Looking for a little help from Listers with experience in valves and especially the cam chain adjustment. Just replaced a couple of shims in my A1 [ first valve adjustment, Can you believe it?]My problem is realigning the cams With the exhaust cam aligned properly using the markings the intake cam is off a little bit the arrow slightly tilted ahead[ maybe an 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch. I tried removing the tensioner all together with little difference. Now I can get the cam to allign using the arrows however there is some slack in the chain on top and for the chain to come tight I am back to my original problem. Can anyone help me in this area??? I am also wondering if I left the intake cam tilted ahead slightley will the tensioner solve my problem for me???? by tightening the chain and bringing the cam back to the proper setting Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Wayne Pike A1

The 2 arrows wont align perfect. Look at the distance between 2 teeth. if that distance is enough to bring the arrows closer in spec than move it. If it will move it out more than leave it alone. I think Mine are about 1/8 in off. I have knocked mine of af alignment once.

valve adjustment

It's time to check/adjust the valves on my '04. Is there anyone in the Atlanta area who has done this who would be willing to walk through this with me the first time? I know there is great info available on how to do it, just was hoping to have some experienced human interaction to assist. Rob

valve adjustment

Post by Jim A Backer » Mon Feb 09, 2004 8:18 pm

I have a 92 A6 klr 650 that I just bought about a month ago with 11000 miles on it. That said I checked the valve clearance today and found that the left ex is .007 the right is .009 the left intake is .008 and the right is .007 all look pretty good to me except the left exhaust. My manual tells me that exhaust should be between 6 and 10 the intake between 4 and 8 so my question to those that are more experienced with the klr than me do I adjust it now or run it for a season and do it when it is out of spec. If I do it now What shim do I order and where from, or do I take it apart to see what shim is in it now to determine what one to order. The shim's in it now are stock. thanx jim ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
