That's a first, I've never heard someone complain that they won't buy a tire again because it is "too light". Easy flats because it's light? What? Heck, I have one of those on order, and it makes me even happier to hear it's light. *Less* unsprung weight is always better, whether it's cars, bikes or whatever. I run slime in my tires, so I won't worry about the flats. Ryan

Ryan, As someone who has changed a tube at midnight at the roadside, covered in the slime that coated the entire interior of the tire carcass (having escaped the tube), I can assure you that Slime does not plug all holes. It won't help pinch flats, and a big enough puncture in the tread area won't get plugged either. I use 3mm HD tubes, I think they're Bridgestone. Dual Star sells even heavier ones, 4mm I think. The rear tubes are 18" not 17". I have heard people complain about this but I had no problems at all installing the 18" tube. I think it's even harder to pinch the 18" tube because it sits away from the bead, inside the tire, until you fully inflate it. Devon Ryan Newman wrote:

I'm also running HD tubes. I also (heaven forbid) don't air down my tires for off road travel. Never have. This has resulted in zero pinched tubes for me in 9 years. As long as I've been riding. I also have never gotten a flat while off road. Neither with my XR, R100GS-PD, or my KLR650. This is probably contributed to carefull riding. I have gotten flats while on-road though. But, as far as the "lighter-softer" Kendas, it would seem they would be easier to change in the boonies anyways. FWIW, I do, just in case, carry tire tools, a Co2 inflator, and extra tubes. Maybe it's Murphys law that has saved me, since I carry extras, it won't break. Ryan

hey all, On changing the fork oil, is that all there is to it? You just drain it and refill with different weight oil? I might do that this weekend. Hey what's the word on the Kenda k-270's? Are they decent? I like the tread design and the price is sure right!!! Anyone want to touch this one? I see that most like the pirelli's dual sport, everything else seems too street oriented or too agressive, to be on a dual sport. I haven't seen any recent messages on this. While your all at it what's the mileage like out of the Kenda's and the pirelli's. Thanks.

The K-270s are great. :) Lots of people use them, and they're probably the best value of any tire for the KLR. I think they last 5k-ish if you put enough pressure in them; mine aren't old enough so I can't say from personal experience. They don't have any acute weak points on the street. -Lujo

I'd like to put in a plug for my favorite combo here. The Duro HF904 from Dennis Kirk on rear, and the IRC GP-110 backwards on the front. The GP I took off went almost 21,000 miles; I changed to a K-270 for last year's Moab, and it doesn't give as good control in loose gravel, sand, and on rocky surfaces. I'll replace it soon, and put it in my Hand-me-down box over in Escalante. The Duro has a herringbone pattern, but the blocks are farther apart than those on the beloved Gripster. Seems as durable, and only $50.00! This combo hooks up in the canyons as well as anything I've tried. '88 KLR bought new, now 57,000 miles. Jake You're welcome to visit my website at:

The whine the Kendas make on the street drives me nuts. The cornering grip of the kendas is poor compared to more street 80/20 tire. I used them for LA- Barstow to Vegas and all the sand, but I'm looking for an extry set of wheels so I don't have to ride K270s, or any other 50/50 tire on the street except to get to the dirt and back. Ride safe, Darrel <--enjoying my gripsters whilst I can A12 From: "kaptainkasual" Hey what's the word on the Kenda k-270's? Are they decent? I like the tread design and the price is sure right!!!
