DualSportNews' KLR650 Discussion ListMy '06 KLR has "2.2L" stamped on the engine case right next to the oil sight glass, which means 2.2 litres. But what I do is: With a warm engine, Drain oil with the bike leaning on its side stand. Change the oil filter. Support the bike so it is standing vertically, not leaning on its side stand. Gently pour in new oil until the level just reaches the top of the sight glass. Put on oil cap, start bike, shut it off, wait one minute. Recheck level in sight glass and add more if needed to bring the level to the top of the sight glass. Mike, If you are using 2.5q and not 2.5L then you will be ~100cc or ml short of the OEM 'spec'. revmaaatin.

Lars, So...just how much oil is in the bike at this point? smile. Do you know what the oil level in your sight gage is when you have added just 2L of oil? or what it looks like when you are 6oz low? For an alternate procedure to what you are doing--as we all know our bikes lean exactly the same amount, cough,.... 1 Fully drain the oil and change the filter. 2 Get the bike on the center stand, blocks, or on a jack, etc. 3 Add two qts of oil Knowing that you will have to add a full 600ml of oil if you used qts. or 500ml if you added 2L. 4 Start the bike and run it long enough to full charge the oil filter; 2-3 minutes. Then shut it off. 5 Let it set for at least 10 minutes, 20 would be better so the oil will all run down 6 Now, check your sight gauge--with the bike vertical. It is likely in the bottom 1/3 of the sight glass. 7 Add oil till it is full in the sight glass and STOP adding. NOTICE: How much of that 600 ml of oil is still in the supply can? NOW: That will be the same amount you will need to add when you can see a 'space' in the top of the sight glass with the bike vertical (as suggested by Mother KAW). The remaining oil in your supply can will be the amount you will need to add now AND later if you see the oil level in the sight gauge to make a full 2.5L of oil in the crankcase. Perhaps using your method of adding oil to the KLR while tilted on its side stand until you have a full sight gauge is 2.5L, but I am a tad skeptical. smile. I suspect you are actually 'overfilling' the oil. But I could be wrong. shrug. and, you are using Rotella oil, right? wink. Remember, heat is transferred from the engine through oil, water and air...it is best to keep the oil near the 2.5L level as much as possible. revmaaatin.

oil change

I have had the bike for a week now. Yesterday I changed the oil. How does one prevent an oil mess when doing the filter? Also, like my VN750, I can't see using the stock Kawasaki round mirrors. My arms hide half of the glass. They must be changed. Thanks Tim
