I'm going to piggyback another question on to this topic. I'm riding my bike mostly on-road and would like to narrow the handlebars by removing about 1" or so from each end. Has anyone done this mod and is there anything I should know before approaching this project? If I go ahead with the mod, I'm planning on using a tubing cutter in order to get a nice clean cut. thanks, ed A17 --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I changed out the factory handlebars for a set two inches shorter. Wanted to pull
my arms in from catching so much wind. Went with an alloy bar from Chaparral Road with a 2.5" rise. Love them. Found them fine for the dirt also. Additionally, they stopped a lot of the vibration in the grips and mirrors.
Cheers,

Ed,
Jeff is right. Just take your two inches out of the middle of the bars and everything will be OK. You don't even have to remove the grips.

Looks like there is about 1" available to move things inboard before hitting the bends. Thanks for the heads-up, however. ed A17> Make sure the grips and associated housings will still fit on the bars. > I don't think there's much room to play with on the stock bars because of > the cross bar and bends. > > Best, > > Jeff Saline

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Ed, I just remembered there is a small "tit" inside the left housing. It goes into a hole in the handle bar. I filed it off my housing when I switched bars. When we swapped parts from bike to bike for Steve on De Tour he filed the "tit" off his 2006 housing. Sounds like this might work for you. I hate to disagree with my leader, Jeff, but it looks like you could safely cut off 1 inch--maybe 1 1/4". In my last get off I bent my handlebars. I have 1 " risers already. So now I want to start a handle bar thread. What works and what does not. I am thinking a little wider bars would be nice. Please let me know what you like about your new handlebars and what you dont. Thanks........

Picked up a '99 KLR650 and the handlebars seem low for standing when off road. Just getting back into the dirt side of motorcycles after a long absence so it could just be me. But have there been any popular handlebar swaps for a lttle more rise?
Thanks,
Jim
