Just for the record: Black bears are much more dangerous than Browns based on just about any level. Black bear in SE Alaska are a constant nuisance. About 20 years ago in Ketchikan, AK people started getting in an uproar about the town landfill attracting so many bears, maybe 50+ each day. People sort of disregarded the fact that building a house close to the dump where hundreds of bears make their buffet is less than stellar community planning. But oh well. Community decided that the bears must go, so they decided to build a fence around the whole landfill. Again poor thinking. The first spring after the fence was built bears descended on Ketchikan for that first big meal of the year. But, oh no, someone built a fence around the buffet!!! It took about 10 minutes for the bears to figure out what to do, which was go a little further down the hill and see what they could scare up(lol, scare up) you got that right? In the proceeding months there were over 300 police calls for bears in town to be shot, relocated, redirected in some manner. Dogs killed or run off cause the bears wanted their kibble, trash everywhere from their depredations, tourists running back up the plank of the cruise ship to tell of their bear experience, the new entry way on the hospital was trashed because a yearling bear wandered over the automatic door opener and went inside the lobby. Other than startling the people in the lobby no damage would have been done if the little fella could have gotten back out the door. After running in to glass doors on both sides, front and back, he did what many youngsters would do, he started crying. That started the 1,000lb momma bear charging the doors, she took out both sides by runnning through the doors literally. Had a little rampage to vent off on small tables, chairs, wadded up one of those 3 seat units of metal and plastic to about the size of a basketball. Didnt see it myself, but anyone who had was certainly impressed. I think the repairs were in the $20,000+ range. Of course that was a "Kodiak" (fish fed coastal bear) not a "brown". Ah, bear stories, got a million of them!! Happy New Year to all!!! Monte

There's a really interesting and fun event in Flagstaff AZ May 17th to 20th = Overland EXPO 2013 Lots of dual sport riders, seminars and classes on travel and an adventure film festival. I have gone the last 2 years and really enjoyed this event. I am going again this year [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

This service already exists on ADVrider.com under "tent space". Viewable / clickable map as well, no fees. Great service. A friend just hosted a couple from Germany. Great way to meet fellow travelers.

This Group has it (to a point) also, when you look at members on the Map, some say, welcome to pitch tent a night or 2, spare room, , tools &/or garage , coffee, etc.. some say nothing. (Remember Even "JUST" a couch, spot on the floor, to throw sleeping bag, is equal or greater then, tent in the woods, etc., you don't have to worry about, Bug's, bears, OR COPS & THIEVES. etc LOL) What the new site does, is opens it up to everyone that wants to join, and has a direct, "simple" area to go for the average person, Not just the,.... ELITE KLR group. LOL There is alot of "Shell" gas stations out there, but it's nice to see others providing gas. AND A TOILET.  to Make it bit easier to make it 250 miles on a tank, OR BLADDER. I used to belong to a group like this called Motorcycle Travel Network. It was a good idea. I had several different couples, singles, and riding buddies stay with us. We always enjoyed sitting around swapping stories and of course looking at their various rides. I only got out one year when we had to remodel our spare room and were in a pinch for funds. I think like a Cook, Waitress, Nurse, Doctor, Lawyer, etc etc etc, It's the person you are working with, that is the ISSUE. When a Waitress does not relay your order properly to the cook, & or stress a tiny note she puts on the slip, Or RE-words what you tell her, He can not prepare the meal "right". Or If she leaves your plate sitting, Under the heat lamp, while she takes a quick break, serves or talks to others etc etc etc, Your meal comes out late, & dry. (Not saying cooks can't make mistakes) Yet She WILL BLAME the cook for the delay, or not doing what she "told him to do". My Claim agent, Lost my paper's, for a bike being totaled, But, the conversation started out him blaming the company. (AAA) Until he found out I had talked to several other people already, then OOP'S Heres the claim, "IT" must have slipped over unto my finished claims pile. YA I understand,......
