air filters

Post by Chris Shepard » Thu Oct 05, 2006 12:49 pm

No toil is not recommended to use for some air filters. It degrades the adhesive that holds the filter together. I talked to a guy that works for UNI and he confirmed that. This happened to my neighbor with his YZ 250. He called No Toil and they sent him a replacement filter. This was probably three years ago though. FWIW. I would contact no toil. I want to get a foam air filter (Unifilter, Twinair, etc.). Do any of you favor one brand over the others, or are they all about the same? Thanks in advance, Gerry

I frequently service the air filter on the road.  So easy cleaning and reoiling are important to me.  I use the (water soluble)  NoToil brand filters and their oil. I can wash the filter with ordinary detergent in a motel sink and reoil it on the road. Takes  only about 10 mins to do so you can service it when you should, even if traveling. NoToil claims that their oil can dissolve the glue on other brands of  filters so only their filters should be used with their oil.  I'm skeptical about the glue dissolving but use their filters anyway since I was  never able to get other filters free of all of the old oil. I've also used TwinAir filters with no issues. I'd avoid K&N on the KLR, based on others experiences with them passing dirt under certain conditions. From: gerryponline@... HI Gerry, short answer--NoToil. smile.I used NoToil on all my personal bikes when I was maintaining a fleet of dirt-sucking bikes, such as, 70/80/100 Honda, 225 Yamaha, 250/300/650 Kawi's with good results long answerI --2, to, too--am a fan of NoToil airfilter oil for the reasons John B has outlined.John speaks of the filter seams failing, and Virginia, indeed they do. IMO, ridiculously fast; sometimes they last one year. .I have had better luck = longer filter life, using OEM filters with NoToil filter oil than their proprietary NoToil branded filter...(in my experience), the NoToil filter seams come unglued faster = fail; faster on the NoToil than on the Kawi OEM filter. YMMV.The price for an OEM filter is about the same as a NoToil. Both are good filters; in my experience, the OEM last longer. If you go in the Kawi shop (at least two that I have been in) and ask for the bi-degradeable Kawi filter-kit, you will see in the fine print, it is a re-badged NoToil product...as well as the Honda filter Oil as well. Both are packaged by NoToil and work just fine on the OEM filters...better IMO. more info than you asked--If your present filter is in good condition, wash it out with the NoToil soap, reoil, and install.I have a special container that I use to oil filters, (an tall, cottage cheese container) and squeeze the remaining oil out of the filter into the container, cap the container with the excess oil inside and it is ready for the next maintenance period. Be sure you have some of those nitrile shop gloves (on your hands) when you 'oil' the filter. It is some sticky stuff.Use the leftover warm water and NoToil soap to clean up any spills. Some suggest the NoToil soap is just Oxiclean brand soap...just missing the blue crystals.m1

1st. Get the Skins from Fred. They are like Nylons, PRE-filters.I keep PRE- oiled ones in a ziplock baggie, and when dirty easly change it, and do NOT have to clean the main (stock) foam filter until I get hm. (weeks 1,000's of miles later) 2nd.Sticky oil, (besides gloves) I put the STOCK filter in an old plastic bag (like most stores put your food in, Home depot  etc.) THEN spray the foam filter INSIDE the bag, and smash it around, spreading the oil threw out the foam, keeping most the mess INSIDE the bag. (AND less chance of getting the clean & OILY filter dirty, OR FLOOR OILY, if I drop it.)

[bulk] [dsn_klr650] air filters

Post by Norm Keller » Fri May 02, 2014 12:00 pm

No Toil for reasons stated.   FWIW, I've had OEM KLR filters come apart when used with No Toil so just buy two for each bike and all's happy.   The new No Toil "oil" in the green bottle is supposed to be more cross-make compatible than the older red bottle stuff. Haven't tried the green bottle stuff on OEM filters to see if it is OK.   Another one to consider is that very hot water can soften some filters which are assembled using hot glue. No Toil have a caution in some packaging which may explain some failed filters.   Never had an issue of service life or filter quality with No Toil or Uni. Problem with No Toil is going back after using them. :)
