By "adjust the balance chain" do you mean loosen the nuts and stuff and let the doohickey do its work? That is the only adjustment that I know of. And it's not up to you, it's up to the spring, I think. I would "guess" that attempting an adjustment with a bad or broken spring might result in not tightening it, but allowing it to loosen, which could be bad for vibration and possibly the motor too. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Fred? Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

<><><><><> <><><><><> Darcy, Fred already covered it but if it's a Gen I KLR (87-07) I'm gonna bet on a broken spring instead of a broken doohickey. If it's a Gen II KLR (08-present) I'll bet Fred's paycheck it's a broken spring. Although either will give you problems, my guess is based that it was "ok" and then you messed with it and it wasn't. I'm guessing the chain was tensioned and loosening the bolt with a broken spring loosened the tensioner instead of tightening it. Of course a broken doo could have been held together by the adjustment bolt and fell apart when the bolt was loosened. Either way you'll be going into the left side of the engine to figure out what is going on. Where are you located? What year is your KLR? After finding my spring broken years back on my '00 at about 10K miles, I do my adjusting during an oil change where I just pull the cover off to make sure it's all working proper. Just don't trust the set up and I only do adjustment on it every 5,000 or so, so no problem.

I had an Australian guy (jock Adams) tell me that when he adjusts his, he takes the side cover off an makes sure the weights are aligned. He says it won't adjust unless you make sure they are aligned??? A friend says he is going to try it this way. I had a broken doohickey and didn't even know it at about 20,000 miles on my '99. A chunk about 3/8's of an inch was missing but there was still enough there for it to stay on the shaft and keep working. Never did find the chunk and have 56,000 on the clock. I have a Jake doohickey and originally his spring....but went down a couple of spring sizes at Fred's once after Eagle Mike helped me check it after suspecting the spring didn't have enough tension. I switched to the torsion spring about a year ago. I also wonder if this person might have messed with the ratcheting chain tension device??? Criswell Sent from my iPad

Hey guys...thank you for all the valuable suggestions regarding my vibration...I had the option of ordering the special tools and waiting at least a week to get them or taking it across the street to the Kawi dealer and having him tell me what it is...they stock the doohickey and spring so I will have it back by Monday for more riding..I prefer fixing most stuff myself but also don't want the longer down time...I will keep the group posted as to what part it actually is...thank you again guys' Darcy [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

recharging aaa batteries (non-klr)

Post by mark ward » Fri Jun 07, 2013 4:10 pm

Hey Who is our Electrical GURU!! I just picked up a "Black Diamond" (brand) head lamp, (Model: Revolt) They say, ONLY Black Diamond NiMH AAA Batteries will recharge in the unit, DO TO, and "Extra Contact point". (To avoid over charging) I looked them over, The "EXTRA" point is the Plastic coating around the Battery is shortened by about 3/8 of an inch allowing the Ground to be contacted in 2 places. (SAME smooth edge from Bottom (GROUND) and Sides. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
