My brother will be coming in on I-40 from Oklahoma, that's why we're meeting in Winslow. The first night is in Kayenta, and it will be a relatively short day because I've always wanted to do Monument Valley at sunset. I was there about a year ago and it was phenomenally beautiful, but I couldn't wait around for sunset as I was being chased by a storm. This time we're going to explore the area and try to make it back to the observation point by sunset for good photography opportunities. > > After that, it's on to Moab, finding a motel for "base camp" and just planning day rides with tips from locals or the Internet. > > On the way out, I'm taking UT12, and I want to do the Area 51 loop, but I will most likely be alone on that leg. > > -Jeff Khoury > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "david zawadzki" fordavidz@...> > To: "Jeff Khoury" jeff@...>, "jim witler" jims1800@...> > Cc: "mark ward" nomad59@...>, "List KLR" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> > Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2013 12:57:18 PM > Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Moab in May??? > > If the initial plan is to meet up in Winslow AZ then do you guys plan on doing something like this? > https://maps.google.com/maps?q=winslow&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl > > I ll be coming from NY so i need to rent a bike and if anyone knows of any places that rent in northern AZ or southern Utah please contact me. > > Thanks! > David > > On Mon, Feb 4, 2013 at 5:55 PM, Jeff Khoury < jeff@... > wrote: > > Mark, > > Those dates are "inked;" I've already requested time off and the whole 9 yards. moab in may???
If I remember correctly, a guy in Moab rents KTM's. Fred would know. Monument Valley at sunrise is primo also especially if you position the sunrise strategically coming through one of the mittens. A thunderstorm with rainbow ain't bad either. Got them digitally. You better start making motel reservations now. They fill up quick in the warmer months.

moab in may???
Guys,
I've come to find that I may be in Utah (Utah County area) in May instead of overseas as I have been for years.
If
dates for the Moab ride have been pinned down and notice sent, I may have deleted the
post due to thinking the ride would not be feasible for me, but, it may be feasible now. Can anyone reply to
this with dates and any other pertinent info such as meeting spot,
whether camping or hotels, etc.?
Best regards,
Gregory Unck

The CMC was always the first weekend after Memorial Day. Memorial Day this year will be May 26, so the CMC would have been held on May 30 June 2.

I'm in. I live in Colorado (about 4 hours from Moab). I would ride there. Would love to put faces with the names.
I usually ride my street bike somewhere the week before or after Memorial Day (too much snow here in the central mountains of Colorado in May for off highway travel). Moab would be a great excuse to ride the KLR.
Did I miss a post about dates? Before or the week of Memorial Day?
Thanks.

Hey All
Have Y'all penciled or INKED, in dates for Moab?
It Would be nice to have some Face time, even if the skill level or Routes chosen lead us down seperate "trails", but would have some evening meals etc. to BS.
I'm still debating, 3-4 good size rides IN the main 48, OR 6-8 weeks rt to Alaska.
I have wanted to get back to Bar Harbor Maine, (& North) when there before a Huricane was coming threw in 2 days, so I was only there on the Island, about 8hr.s
Also Never been to Moab and want to return to Montana to camp & fish.
And many more.

I guess I have been out of the loop. I too would like to know dates, eta, etc.
If you want a cheap roof, the Lazy Lizard would be the place. There are lots more regular motels and places to stay cheaper than the price mentioned here. There are even condos that can be rented if a group of you want to stay in a real house. It is usually cheaper in a condo per person than most motels and nicer too. You can google for the information. The motel we used at the CMC was the Redstone Inn that was close to most everything in town and priced right too. The Canyonlands Campground is right next door in case you want to camp or stay in one of their cabins. They have some of the biggest shade trees too.
Let me know what is going on with your group and if you are needing anything from me for your gathering.

I've stayed at the Lazy Lizard a number of times. You can get a small private room with no bathroom or stay in cabins or dorms. I've never heard of people complaining about thefts at the campground where most attendees stay. Havn't been able to to be at the last few rallies because I work in Spain at that time. Oh well ..tradeoffs.

Hi Gregory,
I dunno about everyone else, but my brother and I will be arriving in Moab on May 20th at some point. We will find a reasonably priced motel room with two beds and stay there; no further planning has been made. I will be available via email, facebook and if anyone feels the need to contact me more urgently I can provide phone/sms numbers.
If it fits with your schedules, we will also have overnights in Winslow, AZ on the 18th and Kayenta, AZ on the 19th.

I would suggest trying to book a hotel / motel as early as possible they start filling up in the latter part of May.

moab in may???
When I stay in a room it's based 1st. CLEAN, safe,(bike& gear outside) then rate.
If Gone most the day, etc., compared to sleeping on a pad in a tent, how much more do I need?
While I have spent more then a few nights in a few different 4-4.5 star hotels, It is Not how a live on a daily bases. (FAR from it.)

Never tried the Lazy Lizard. I have camped at the Canyonlands Campground, and never worried about my stuff there, as long as it was mostly full of motorcyclists. Get too many RVers or quad scum, though, and all bets are off. I like the cabins there, too. Real cheap for four, but a little crowded. Still cheap enough for two, and much more comfortable.
