I agree. There is not a better all around motorcycle than the KLR when you consider price, durability and what it is able to do. I cringe every time I see the mags promoting the latest 550 pound poser pig of a dirt bike that is $10,000 to $20,000. There is no way I would take them where I have taken my KLR....and if you fall over on them, you don't cry. I love a bike you don't have to wash and polish. They could be better however. Maybe a gear driven balancer, fuel injection, 6 gears with a low 1st gear. The seating position for long days is still more comfortable than my Versys or Concours. Criswell Sent from my iPad

To a rider who has a vintage bike it might mean something simple as a ride into town couple miles away. To a KLR junkie it could be a trek across the Rockies or Sierra off road. But to the point - If there's a better do it all motorcycle than the KLR I've yet to see it. There's all kinds of great motorcycles but this simple thumper should be considered one of the most versatile of the bunch IMHO. Haven't read the Egan piece yet but have always enjoyed his writing. Adventure riding seems to be such a subjective topic. Don't you think? > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

90 degree day??? That is springtime here. Try 105. I hibernate at 105 ( but have been known to ride in it). Air cooled is probably not good on those days. But a lot of Hoggly's runaround in it. Criswell Sent from my iPad

I agree completely. It needs more gears and less weight. Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

I live in west-central Arkansas. I have had both the DR650 and the KLR650 out on the trails, at slow speeds, for hours at a time, in 100+ temps. Never had a problem with either of them. On the DR I do notice the heat on my legs more when riding slow. But that is the extent of things. I had bought a DR650 a few years back after selling my KLR to a friend. After about a year of it, playing about in South Louisiana, Arkansas, and Big Bend, TX., I sold it and at 1st opportunity, bought my old '00 KLR back from my friend. At that time, I was weighting about 240 so had to beef up the DR's suspension to get the sag set close to where I wanted it. I enjoyed the lighter weight of the DR and that was about the only thing as I don't do the high tech riding at my then age of 68. I never did like the lack of low end feel of the engine and going a tooth down on the counter did help it out a bit. But it never had the low rpm lug of the KLR. Plus I was cramped on it, probably from being on KLR's since '92 and BMW GS's from '95 to '07. Then a DL1000 for 14 months and 16K miles before going to my present '07 Bandit S I bought as a left over in the spring of '08, which has a corrected 66K miles on it now. Hence, back to my old '00 KLR and really not planning on another bike, Unless, Kawasaki chooses to put FI on the KLR.
