After bypassing my failed clutch switch, my radiator fan does not come on in my '07. What steps should I take to rectify this? Seems like a lot for a bike that does not have 10,000 miles on it. Thanks Tim

You may have a blown fuse or you have lost the ground connection.  If you look at the fan and find the connection close to the fan you can disconnect it and short it to ground, if the fan has a good fuse it should start. Tim, I feel your pain-- Imagine crossing an area of MT, WY and its 95-105F OAT without a working fan. Did that last 'week' 15-19 Aug. Keep moving and the water temp via thermo-bob stayed acceptable. Early on, I cleaned the contacts of the lower radiator/lead/fan switch at Wise River,MT no joy. Drove it ~800 miles in cooler OAT temps, then the last ~500 miles in elevated OAT temps; trouble shot it again at Jeff Saline's, sigh--and it worked, albeit, the fan needed replacing due to the blade was not turning in-plane, which we knew at Wise River, MT. A previous JB weld repair had failed and the fan was now toast. Keep in mind, 90% of all electrical problems are a problem with the 'ground'. or other electrical connection that will not allow electricity to flow. It is doubtful that the two maintenance events you just completed are related. shrug. could be, probably not. Most likely the fan was not running before you started--if it is a related, it was because you bumped a wire with tank off--which is not necessary to bypass the clutch safety. IRT to your fan problem-- The wire you want to 'ground' is the one at the bottom of the radiator; connected to a thermal switch. There is 12v Or full battery voltage of 12.6+v in that wire at all times. (If there is no juice--the fan will not run. smile. anyway- Remove it and push the end of the female connector against the engine jug. The fan should run; if there is 12.6+v in the wire. Checking the fuse: The fuse is under the right tank shroud. Even if the fuse looks 'good' test it with a volt meter or try a fresh fuse. then try the wire to the 'jug' test again. Good fuse, 12V = running fan. If all that works! then: Also make sure the male-lead in the bottom of the radiator is 'clean' and makes a good contact. You can clean this with WD-40 (field emergency) alcohol, or CRC electrical contact cleaner (best solution). While you are looking at this make sure the fan turns freely without binding. (disconnect the lead at the bottom of the radiator before sticking your finger in the fan (or remove ground from the batter--however, the lower radiator lead is enough). IF: you have 12V+ in the lead, the fuse is good, and it still does not work, you have a fried fan or at least something loose in the motor that keeps it from working...which is possible but not very likely. IMO. shrug. so if all you are left with is BAD NEWS: wait, there is more! The good news: a ninja EX500 fan assembly is available here: http://motors.shop.ebay.com/__?_from=R40&_trksid=m39&_nkw=ninja+ex500+fan should you need a donor fan/motor, etal, in price ranges of $15-$150. I just got one (very nice with no corrosion) for $26 delivered. The Ninja EX500 fan is a two wire fan, vs the KLR 3-wire fan. "I believe" the KLR third wire is an additional, more-positive ground, directly from the motor to frame. I don't have the experience, but "I believe" it will work just fine without it. (I bought the fan assembly for the fan blade--and now have a spare motor.) You will see that the ninja fan is 8 blade vs the KLR 6-bladeed fan. . The bolt and radius of the fan are =, so it bolts right in. It will give you a smiley face all over again. I think the OEM price for the entire KLR assembly is $385, so $26 is looking pretty good! So best to replace the whole fan motor and fan blades with the Ninja or just the blades? What year Ninjas? Anybody know the CFM difference? Anybody know the motor rating difference? What holds the KLR and Ninja fan on? press fit or set screw? Jeffrey #3
