75 in a couple of months--still riding Valkyrie and KLR.  Like fighting wildfire it sure beats TV.

older guys on klr's

62 here, and going into my eighth season of KLRing. I started riding dirt bikes about ten years before that, after 25 years of road riding, with only a few detours off pavement. A lot of the guys I ride with are into their 70's and most of them are still faster than I never was, a bunch of old flat trackers and AA enduro riders. For a few years, I tried to go to school on these guys, thinking I could still get better. Now i realize that it's more about fitness and endurance, and declining skills will more than offset any tricks I might acquire. As we get older, we have two choices: slow down, or find a way to make the landings softer. If I fell off on the pavement half as much as I do off it, I'd have to give up riding.

I'm 56, 6'0" , 210 Lbs ('06 KLR). Other than the fact that you have to lift your leg like a dog next to a fire hydrant to get on the thing; there's a lot to like about a KLR. It's not a crotch rocket, it's not a cruiser. It's one of the more enjoyable lightweight standard bikes on the market. It's cheap to ride and insure. In this day of $20K+ Harley look-alikes, not a bad deal. And with a few inexpensive mods you can keep up with those guys as well.

I got introduced to the KLR 650 by a cop.  A big mean cop at Sears Point Raceway who said "It's a 650. Plenty of power.  Nobody gets away from me.  If you are riding where you shouldn't be riding, I will give you a ticket."  He was about 50, give or take.  And nasty.  My wife bought me mine, but it is a really good deal.  A no bull big dirt bike that can keep up with anything on the road, and if you're up to it, it can ride the trails with just about anybody. The problem is the weight.  My only complaint is picking it up.  I can do it, but I don't like to do it.  I think the KLX 250 would be easier to pick up, but not as much fun on the highway.  On the highway I pass other bikes all the time.  You're not going to do that on the 250. older guys on klr's

I'm "just" 44 (with winds gusting to 45) and bought my KLR last year.

Three times I've purchased a new something without actually riding or driving it first.
I actually paid for and was the owner of two bikes on different occasions where I had not actually seen
them until the paperwork was done. The 1st was my first new motorcycle - a 1991 CB750. I LOVED that bike.
The reports on it were very positive and the price was right, too.
It did nothing terrific and yet nothing wrong, either. I racked up 20,000 miles on it in a hurry!
I never regretted buying it.

The 2nd was my current KLR650. Same deal. I read all about it - doohickey & all - and decided I'd like it, too.
A call, short road trip, 20 minutes of paperwork and I owned the one I could hear idling back in the shop.
I walked back and couldn't get over the "Cool! This is *my* bike!" feeling.
6,000+ miles later, it's like that Honda. I do not regret buying it one bit.

On those two experiences I made a third not long ago. I bought my first new car. I saw them unwrap it
after taking it off the truck. I looked through the windows, went home, called back and made a deal.
It was mine and I'd never sat in it - much less driven it. It just seemed to fit me.
A month later and I still have both it and the KLR.
Old guys can make impulsive decisions just like younger ones. A KLR650 is just a way of saying,
" Yea, but they're GOOD impulsive decisions."
I think so, anyway.

I think I met that guy on a ferry trip in the San Juans. He was heading home after a trip to Alaska with another cop. He mentioned he was an officer that covered the Sear Point raceway area and rode a KLR for work.   West   To: RJTaylor@... CC: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com From: robert@...

I'd say with a bone stock bike you ride circles around those guys is more like it. ;->
