Cory, Several possibilites here. A tired chain can cause things like this. If the chain was run too tight and damaged the ouput shaft bearing, another possibility. Try taking the chain off, with the gearbox in neutral, and rotate the sprocket. Listen for the sound. Inspect the chain and sprockets. The tensioner you are referring to (I think) is for the counter-balancer, and is inside the engine. This can also cause weird noises and engine damamge. Since your noise is related to the chain and sprockets rotating, and not the engine running, I'd guess it isn't the balancer system right now. all the best, Mike

Sounds like a stretched chain. The scraping noise could be the loose chain dragging on the case. Time for a newe chain/sprocket.

Might also first check to see if alignment of the chain is correct, and if you have had the chain guard off recently that it is properly installed. Had installed my chain guard (on swingarm) and had something wrong and got that type of sound also. Never hurts to check the simple stuff first. I just started riding again after many years. I bought what I ( thought) was a good bike. All i see here is depressing me and I tend to miss my good OLD to miss my 2 STROKE days. I owned a suzuki 380gt a ts 250 and rm 400 . I guess my good old ( days ) of no worries are over . I rode them beat the HECK out of them. NO worries. Guess it was my mistake. And I never had a doohicky prob. WOW am I depressed

I am on my third KLR and maybe have been lucky as I have never had a major problem with any of them, #2 I really didn't put many miles on it, but #1 and #3 are getting years of use with only batteries, TX seems to eat them, batteries that is. My 2008 has only had seat tear issues so far! What year did you get, what "issues" are you having?

RBW, Don't listen to the negative crap. People that hang out on a list dedicated to one bike tend to dwell too much on the problems because it's something to talk about. Kinda like the TV that announcers only talk about the sensationalist bad stuff. The KLR is supremely reliable and will carry you damn near anywhere on the planet and bring you back without letting you down. Just get on it and ride. That's what it's all about. If you DO encounter problems then come to the list where there are some true experts and get some great advise for fixing them but don't forget that the KLR is one of the best selling dual sports in history with GREAT parts availability for repair and "upgrades" and is quite reliable, especially considering what we ask of them.... I don't know about the '08 bikes, but the decade+ of riding KLR650s has been a good time for me. Sure, I've had one engine blow up, but that was one I bought from a wreck and it had a questionable history before I got it. Other than that, they have been extremely reliable and cheap to keep. Mark
