SO TRUE!!!! There is a brand new shiny BMW 05 GS in my garage that parks next to my KLR. I love going down to Mexico and coating my bike with mud and parking a little too close to his. I know it pisses him off because he complains to the valet. I'm looking for some week old road kill to stick in the forks to get the fumes going. Now THIS is the kind of insight I need to help me adapt to my new KLR
ownership experience! Bravo!
The plans I have for the KLR aren't purely cosmetic. Although there's
a great aftermarket windscreen selection for the KLR, none of them
would be confused with a barn door. I hope to add a high-end
bar-mounted windscreen for some serious highway wind protection, and
easily removable for hot weather and trail riding.
The FJR was the finest bike I ever owned (#7) but my problem with it
was that it was "too nice" to farkle much on. I'm happiest when
jury-rigging something on my bike, and the FJR wasn't the right
platform. The KLR is perfect for that.
More importantly, while the FJR made me think I could ride
cross-country at 1,000 miles a day, the sad truth was it had 5,800
miles on it in two years, and it never left Florida.
'Course, the KLR makes me think I'm gonna tour Alaska with Dr. Frazier
someday...

OK, call me flighty. I bought a new bike today to replace the FJR, but
alas, it wasn't a KLR, or a dual-purpose at all.
I am now the proud owner of a 4,000 mile 2003 FZ1 ("bumble-bee" color)
In the end, my street-bike me won out over my DP wanna-be me.
You guys and this listr still rock!
Thanks and good luck to all!

Paul - You're gonna LOVE the FZ1 (although you should have looked for a
faster Blue version) but don't write off the KLR's permanently. I've got
one of each (retired and having a great time spending my kid's inheritance)
and the Fizzie is great for almost everything EXCEPT Florida's sand/dirt/mud
backroads. (Don't ask how I know). Anyhow, I really wanted something
trail capable and that lead me to the KLR. Now, having had the FZ for
about 3 years and the KLR for 1, if I had to choose only one bike, I
honestly think I'd have to keep the KLR despite it's relative lack of
sophistication and performance. That even though about 90% of my riding is
on pavement. Fortunately, I don't have to choose at this point...multiple
bike syndrome is something I have learned to live with. Enjoy your new
ride....

Flighty,
You'll be back, wait and see, and we'll still be here.

Just purchased an 08 650 and want add bags. Plan on using Pelican
cases but not sure of bag mounts. I have looked at Caribou mounts but
would like mounts that fit closer, any suggestions? Pros/Cons of
Pelican over other hard bags?

Jeff, I ought to have know that some one from the Airhead list would be
lurking on the KLR site... Yes I will be at the Nationals, not sure about
the KLR.... I am actually working off of my bike.. Ordered a Pelican 1500
box to put on the back to secure court orders and such.. I like the Orthlieb
bags for off road.

the vibration hunt (nklr)
Is "hunting for vibration" on a KLR related to that fine old Olympic
event called "Shooting Fish jn a Barrell"?
