I went riding with some guys and their 2000-2003 era camo green bikes. We stopped deep in the forest for a hike down a walking trail. When we came back, it took us days to find those camouflage bikes! My red KLR stood out like a beacon, so we knew the general area to search. If I had taken the Super Sherpa (same paint scheme as the 2001 KLR), we might still be out there looking............. PS: I like all the colors, even the Barbies.

I have both the Lime Green (Team Green?) and an 07 Ebony. I love both. The 07's have a new shift lever. Haven't noticed a diff yet between the shifters - don't particularly want to. The Green one is faster though. The green one does make me feel more "visible" and I get lots of looks on it. The black one is stealthy. Very cool. Plus I love the tinge of yellow on it. I just bought an 06 Red and now wish I had waited a few months for a black one. It makes the KLR look mean! Eventually when my A6F fades to pink I'll strip it down and paint it black. Cheap, cheap, cheap - I'm using the Rustoleum hammered black and hammered gray spray paint plus a clear coat. I've been surprized by how tough it has been. Of course, judging by some of the KLR pictures I've seen in the news groups such as this one, not much paint is visible through the dust and mud and the visible scratches are probably just beauty marks or character scars. I can't resolve this for the pickier souls. If you want pretty, what were you thinking when your bought a KLR? I guess that we tread variable and frequently divergent paths. Hello Steve, One of the reasons I bought a new KLR is because of all the comments and raves about it on the net. I bought it mainly for commuting to work. It is also a great urban vehicle compared to my 84 Yamaha Venture Royal, which is now retired. I've taken it out on the trails and fire service roads many times, but my main woods bike is my 2000 XR650R. I plan on making the XR a dual purpose bike so I don't have to trash the KLR so much and keep it mostly for my commute. Everytime I ride the KLR out on a poker run or when it gets really trashed on the trails, I clean it. I know I'm not supposed to clean it, but I like to take good care of my equipment and cleaning it is part of my maintenance program. This may sound funny, but I want to get 100,000 miles out of the KLR before I retire it. The KLR is a 2006 and I figure I can reach my goal of 100,000 miles by mid 2010 give or take. As for the KLR being ugly, well, I think it's one of the better looking dual-sport bikes out there. Maybe I'm weird for thinking that. I put about two grand worth of aftermarket stuff on it and I think it is now one of the best bikes I've ever owned. OK, I wrote your ear off enough, take care, Tim.....

Hal-- You stopped at $2000? How did you do that? They must be using fuzzy math. Say, here's some trivia-- did you know, that $2000 figure is exactly 10% of my hospital stay, and the $$ damage to the bike? Zero. Good armor on the KLR does pay for itself. revmaaatin. on the other hand, if I did not ride a KLR, there would not have been $20K hospital expenses....just doing my part for the economy....

Thanks, Norm Hello Norm, Yes, the steel was intended to protect the radiator. After seeing pictures on the Internet and hearing horror stories of KLR radiators that where bend in the middle simply by falling over, I decided to put a 5/8th thick, 1 1/2 inch wide piece of steel along the length of the radiator. I put double back tape on it and used two zip ties to help keep it in place. I took the steel off when I got the radiator replaced because of a pin hole leak in the radiator and put the tank guards on. When I took the steel off, it didn't appear to have moved at all or make any kind of ware marks on the radiator at all. I just thought that putting a piece of steel up and down the length of the radiator might help keep it a little more protected in a fall. I did the same thing with my XR650R, except I used aluminum instead. Tim......
