I just got back from Copper Canyon with KLR listers Pete Sutherland and Gary Patterson. Great ride but mostly pavement. The ride down the Canyon is not a difficult ride but you have to watch the numerous marbles trying to roll you and your heavily laden KLR off the numerous drop off's. But our tour director Dan was on an ST 1100 (with ABS) so that just tells you with a dirt orientated bike, the ride is no big deal. Beautiful canyon and beautiful local people. The kids in every small town would wave or high five us and treat us like a rock star. Fun stuff. The senoritas are muy bonito. You should have watched Pete on his KLR hang with Dan (Dan is an ex flat tracker/ motocrosser / road racer) pretty good on the numerous paved twisties. Criswell

Hi Ron, glad your trip turned out well

I only did it once but the ride was more difficult ( in spots ) than you describe; definitely would not' want to do it on a ST 1100. I think the state of the road varies depending on what the weather does to it and how it's maintained.

Most people were very nice but....in one of the villages you drive through, toward the top, some Indian kids threw rocks at me. I was doing nothing unusual just going down the main road. ( Might be the Karma I project ) I hear all the cheap hotels in Batopilas are gone, replaced by American style fancy ones. Is that true ? Also, still only one place ( illegal ) to get beer to go ? Still have to haul the hard stuff down from Creel ? Bogdan

last spring i was in Batopilas and stayed in the new motel, Can;t think of the name, The lady tried to charge me 200 Pesos, I agreed on 100 pesos per night. Down the street on the same side of the street was St Marys, She tried to get me to stay at her motel for 75 pesos. I never found any beer or the hard stuff in the area.
