I thought it might be carb related last summer. I was thinking about jetting the carb but was advised not to spend the money on that, to make sure its not something else, before I put money into it. I drained the tank last summer and put all fresh gas in it. I'll have to check the carb vent. I wish I could ride today and try to figure it out, but there is still snow here. "Judson D. Unless you first disable the automatic compression release, a compression check is not much use. I don't know if there is a convenient way to do that. Rejetting is not the answer. I'd say, fill the tank with fresh gas and a can of Seafoam and go ride it, see if you still think it loses power. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Wayne Watson wrote:

To disable it, you'd have to pull the valve cover and wire the KACR "open" (i.e. in running position) to get "real" compression numbers. The service manual gives a range for the compression because of the variability that the KACR introduces into the system. What's Seafoam? It sounds like a contraceptive. Z DC A5X A11X

Seafoam is a fuel stabilizer/carb cleaner/ dry-gas product. It was the darling of the XJ owners list, because it would actually work, and getting off the carburetors on those bikes was the worst part of an engine strip. It's not for sale in CA which is a promising sign of its effectiveness. Look for it at marine supply stores, it's meant to keep marine engines (especially outboards) running in spite of the horrible use and storage they are subjected to. Devon

You're thinking of C-foam Seafoam a proprietary snake oil product, not unlike MMO in that it is supposed to cure everything. Sticky rings, gummy carbs, noisy lifters, the works. A can in a tank of gas may actually relieve mildly varnished jets, and is easier than pulling the carb apart. Beyond that, purely talismanic.

Thanks for the tip, Devon. I bought some Gum-Out Marine something or other that had all the properties of Seafoam at Wally World this weekend. I dumped half a bottle in the tank and it cured my erratic idling problem. It was tested today when I sat in line at the inspection station for two hours with the engine idling the whole time. One other trick I know of for a clogged pilot circuit, is to remove the pilot mixture screw and blast choke cleaner up into the carb. Let it sit for half a minute at most (choke cleaner is not nice to rubber) then blast compressed air into the screw hole. Devon Zachariah Mully wrote:

Vehicle Inspection line, for a motorcycle ? Even Illinois did'nt test motorcycles AFAIK. Assuming smog test here and not saftey. Wow.. they dont test anything up here in Michigan, at least the U.P., the state would go broke putting in machines and paying attendants up here, not enuff people, and distance is too much to make people drive to a central place I suspose. If'n ya got a clear title, it seems you can get tags. ;-) Dooden

I recently saw Sea Foam for sale here in Ca at the Napa store in San Luis Obispo. First time I have seen it out here. My friends in the salvage yard business in Minnesota say it is the best stuff they've found for gummed-up carbs. Kurt Grife [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Kurt, The best thing *I* have found for gummed up carb(s) is Chevron's Techron, also sold at NAPA. This stuff will get rid of all but the most stubborn blockages. Also promotes hair growth... Good alternative to the little blue pill... and smells good too... Of course, YMMV. :-) Guy At 08:23 PM 3/12/03 EST, Krgrife@... wrote:
