Hi Fellows,
I have just got a break in work and would like to change my doo. Where and who is the quickest on sending out the doo? I would like to do it this week or the following week.
Thanks for all the help and information.

Hello to the group,
Ihave had the same experince with the salesmen I have encounterd.
What doohickey? I happily judt replaced mine with one from Happytrails.
4300mi. original doohickey was intact and spring was too. I also
replaced spring with upgraded spring. I just got back from a 50mi. ride
very hot it has been parked for a couple hours and no leaks. YAHOO!!!
I was amazed at how cheap and underbuilt the original doo was in an 04.
I now have piece of mind and confidence in my machine.
See ya on the road or trail,
Gregory in Montana

Hello Everyone,
I know this subject has been beat to death on other sights but I just
bought an '08 650 klr and wanted to know some thoughts, if this is a
neccessary replacement to do or if the other sights were just biass.
Anyhow the bike doesn't even have a mile on it yet, it's been a little
to cold for me to ride but I can hardly stand it! Any tips or
suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thank's All--Jon

<><><><><><> <><><><><><> Jon, I think the majority of folks posting on this site suggest you should still change the doohickey on an 08. I understand it's been changed from the earlier doohickeys but still isn't correct. It's got more slop on the shaft now than the earlier models and I believe it still can be easily bent or broken. The spring is too long now so you probably won't get tension after maybe 5,000 miles from what I remember being told. If Eagle Mike is on he might pipe in with his thoughts on this subject. Newest bikes I've ever changed a doohickey on are two 2005 or 6s with no road miles. They were put on a trailer at the dealer and brought to my shop. The next in line is a 2004 with 12 miles on it. Along with the doohickey situation take a look at the valve adjustment and oil change intervals. They might be a bit long for this bike. I'm not sure of mods done to the 08 doohicky,But I agree with Jeff,Don't take any chances.My 07 had 11500 miles on it when it stopped running due to broken doohicky.When I checked the broken parts,It appeared the part had been broken from the start.The bottom end sounded like a blender with rocks in it.I don't think you will have any luck getting kawi to warranty the repair.Mine was 500 miles from being out of warranty when it stopped.Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

~~~general consensus is, the 08' factory piece has been much improved but the factory spring wont go the distance. If cash is tight, buy the better spring, the two case gaskets, install the better spring and call it done. There are some nice photos of all the doo hickeys over on the klr world forum. You'll see em' in the 08' section. Photos of all the doo hickeys Kawi used through the years including the 08's, Eagle Mike's, side by side so you can look at them and decide for yourself Do you have the tools or can you borrow them? I didn't so I bought the tools. The Eagle Mike doo isn't all that much more cash if you're buying the tools, etc. IIRC, it cost me $150 for the kit which included the Eagle Mike doo, two springs, two case gaskets, new rotor bolt, rotor removal tool, rotor holder tool, shipping included in that price (purchased from Fred at Arrowhead, hey! that rhymes=:-) Others may have better and different ideas Jake Reddick Fla.> > Hello Everyone, > > I know this subject has been beat to death on other sights but I just > bought an '08 650 klr and wanted to know some thoughts, if this is a > neccessary replacement to do or if the other sights were just biass.
The '08 doo is beefier but still has a 'fatal' flaw - it is still quite loose on the eccentric shaft. Get a new Eagle lever from Fred at Arrowhead, and get a new spring too - either a torsion spring or the extension springs that come with the kit.
So I decided to check my Doohickey on my 2005 KLR with 34975 miles on
it today 07/20/2008 and adjust the valves. Yes that's the correct mileage.
First the valve adjustment. Intakes in spec @ .006 but exhausts are
tight @ .002 so set them to .008 then I went to check the Doohickey. I
previously checked it @ 15000 miles and it was intact and spring was
in place so I left it alone, Besides when I called Kawasaki tech
support they told me because I have and extended Kawasaki GTPP
warranty, any aftermarket internal engine modifications would void the
warranty, So at that time I just replaced the gaskets, Well I have
less then a year left on my warranty and 400 miles ago while riding I
heard a terrible noise come from the engine that I didn't like so I
bought the Doo kit from MSM
http://www.multisurfacemotorcycling.com/products/klrprod.htm and a
rear 6.6kg spring a few months ago in anticipation to replace the doo,
well the doo is still there unbroken but the spring is missing. Where
did it go? I searched for it everywhere,used small bendable magnets to
try and locate it with no success. Well looks like I have to pull the
clutch cover off and check the filter screen next.
Here is a link to some pictures I took
After the repairs, the engine seems smoother now. good for another
35000 miles I think
