Robert, good idea.  I had a DellOrto (sp) pumper on my SR500 and it was a big improvement over stock.

I'm about to pick up a 97 dr350 on Thursday.  I ll let you know how it it.  My friend had a drz400 and complained that when you hit 70 the engine squeaks.  (Not that we should be going that fast on bikes but anyway) Pre 94dr350s are non electric start (I think) -David Zmobile: 646.267.1109www.thelegendofzarko.com

Interesting JW. As several have said, either will work for most of the riding you plan to do.   One thing I would add is that neither is ideal for work in the deep sand dunes that are better handled by a lighter and more powerful bike with true off road suspension and tires. The 400 probably has a broader list of upgrades and farkles available as it is still in production.  It does have the last revision of right side up forks that were on the RM dirt bike before Suzuki went inverted on that bike.  A pumper carb can be had for either bike as well as big bore kits and exhaust work. If you plan to add things like racks, skid plates, panniers and racks, you might check availability for each and include those costs in your decision.  Most of my bikes I have put as much into upgrades and making them fit me as I have in the bike itself. You indicated it may come down to money for you.  You might consider how either bike will hold its value if you get one and decide you want to sell it in a year.  It would be a shame to loose money on the bike and all your upgrades.  IMO, the DRZ is at the upper end of the pricing range.  It may be an extra nice bike, or just hard to come by in your area.  I bought my 2006 for 3k and it had a 435 big bore plus full FMF exhaust with 2500 miles on the clock. For sure let us all know which direction you go. Randy Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone -------- Original message -------- From: "jwflower53@... Gents, For a well maintained 97 dr350 (new clutch, no leaks) is 18k miles considered a lot? How many miles can the bikes get pushed to? -David Zmobile: 646.267.1109www.thelegendofzarko.com

nklr dr350 v drz400?

Post by jwflower53 » Sun Aug 23, 2015 11:27 pm

Randy, I bought the '99 DR350 today, $1800.  There's nothing major wrong with it, could have ridden it home, though there's some deferred maintenance.  It could be a perfectly useable machine for three hours' work and little to no money.  I do have longevity questions (this bike has almost 19k on it).  But this was by far the best bike out there for this little money, and just a 1/2 hour drive from my house.  It has a sturdy rack and aftermarket skid plate.  It's been lowered and unfortunately the seller didn't have the stock dogbones but I'm sure those are an easy get.  The rest looked stock, including that little bitty gas tank, 2 gal I think.  Suspension seems soft at both ends, and there's a good bit of dive on braking.  The forks seem to have more adjustment functions than on the KLR, no?  I'm thinking suspension's the place to put time and money, after I just spruce it up and ride it awhile to flush out any problems I didn't catch on the test ride.
At this price point I'm not too concerned about resale value.  And it's impression that one doesn't usually get back the money spent on farkles anyway.

JW,The soft suspension is one of the great features of the DR 350.  The dive you experience when you do a hard emergency break is not a big thing to me. It is still slowing down, which is the objective. You mess with the suspension and you miss with the ride. "Leave well enough alone" is a good practice.rw On Sunday, August 23, 2015 11:27 PM, "jwflower53@...
