My big gripe with Garmin is that after a year or so you start getting messages on the GPS that your maps may be out if date, and right after that huge holes start appearing in your maps. Now, those maps were just fine a few months ago, what caused them to develop holes? It worked, though, the price of a new, bigger, GPS was only $5 more than a new mapset so I got one. Doesn't make me hate them less. It's sad that so often now days it's cheaper to THROW AWAY an iten rather then repair or upgrade.
New Batteries for a cordless drill? CHEAPER & BETTER to buy a WHOLE NEW KIT!! (2 batteries, NEW DRILL, Case, charger WARRANTY ETC ETC.

Download maps, for free, anytime you want.
Once they are in your phone, you don't need a cell phone connection, you are a free-roaming GPS.

I feel your pain about the maps. On the other hand, having up to date maps is a good thing. The price has come down, and most GPS's either come with lifetime maps, or can be purchased. The resolution of the maps have improved also. My newest NUVI car GPS is amazing, especially the traffic. I use it daily on my Seattle commute. If you have an old GPS you might be impressed with one of the new ones.
While there are problems with the algorithms that are used for routing, especially with some of the old processors, I find that how you have the GPS's avoidance settings will affect how it will route you. For instance if you set the GPS to avoid U turns, it will send you around the block. Same thing for carpool lanes. Then there is always the classic failure to set the GPS to avoid dirt roads, and being sent over a dirt pass in the mountains.
If you really want to rant about maps, how about paying $500 for the out of date/unreliable Trans America Trail paper maps/roll charts. I still feel taken.
Cheers,
Doug Walker

gps for on and off-road
My experience is quite different. There are many who ride of-road who stick with the old Garmin 276C mapping units. I have 2. I've been using the same map version for 7 years -no messages, no "holes" in the map.
Re; a special map on your cell phone- I don't know about them but I do suspect that they won't heve the capability for mapping, certainly check for that. If you're a road rider anything will plan and navigate for you but try entering a set of trails that don't show on the map- like the TAT. That requires a mapping GPS to the best of my knowledge.

The 276C is very hard to beat as an adventure GPS. Just too bad they won't even repair them anymore. Much less, never built anything to take their place. I do use a Montana 600 , and it does a good job ,. But, a touch screen , with gloves and making on the fly changes totally sucks. I have one working 276C and one with a bad component inside. But , saving it to do a screen change when my present one, which is starting to show streaks and smudges on the screen , finally gets too bad to read. Then I'll attempt to make one good one out of the two.
I would thing the 376 and 476 would do great also as they are upgrades from the 176 and 276C.

I have a 276 C......somewhere(heh). I use my iPhone for a GPS most....but have not tried it on trails. Battery staying charged is the main issue for that.

Run a 12V line so you can plug in your car charger. I have two outlets on my bikes. One for the GPS and one for the phone.

Motion X GPS has several map types. Fourteen, actually. One is a topographic map with even walking trails. Old barns show up. I do not think that the trees are accurate (just kidding).
From the manual:
Map types: MotionX: road, terrain (OpenStreetMap / OpenCycleMap data) Apple: road, aerial, hybrid Google: road, aerial, hybrid, terrain Bing: road, aerial, hybrid, terrain Marine: NOAA charts (US coastal areas)

Thanks, Robert, for that phone GPS recommendation. It is sooo user friendly, really important for me !! I just flirted with it off road this PM and it was great. I have not had a KLR in 4-5 years yet I continue to lurk because of the great people and info on this list. I ride a DR350 or an 800GS depending ! Always regretted selling it, but it went to a perfect buyer !
Again, thanks for the tip !!

Those GPS 276c units are still getting about 600 bucks on ebay. I have a Russian Memory chip in mine that does a gig and have almost all of the US on it. I think I had around 900 bucks on the first unit I bought from Garmin by the time you have the unit, all cords, mounts for motorcycles and truck and Maps.
