My shift lever broke this morning, right at the shaft. Can this item be purchased from Arrowhead or Happy Trails...or anywhere other than the Kaw Dealership? Thanks in advance, bds

Arrowhead for sure, that's where I got my IMS shifter. I'm not sure about Happy Trail. It's common for the stock shifter to break, by the way... Mark --------------------------------------- KLR650 Motorcycle Website: http://klr6500.tripod.com/

The OEM shift levers are notoriously weak items. I suppose that its better break the lever than damage a case or shaft, but they are wimpy. Dual Star makes a nice replacement as do several others, so yes, they can be had from other than big K. Eric Stevens Mechanicsburg, Pa --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Brian Sawyer" wrote:

~ I installed a Happy Trails shift lever - it appears to be built very well. ~ "Happy" with it. My shift lever broke this morning, right at the shaft. Can this item be purchased from Arrowhead or Happy Trails...or anywhere other than the Kaw Dealership? Thanks in advance, bds [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Get the IMS or Moose steel replacement, not another OEM POS. Fred, Dual-Star, and others usually have them in stock. The Dual-Star even has the "value-added" flat disc welded on the lever where it can more evenly distribute impact on the engine case during a fall, lessening the likelihood of piercing it. Just saw that Tim (Happy-Trails) also has a nice looking one with the disc like Dual-Star's........ Stock shifter replacement is considered a necessity by yours truly. Picture being two hundred miles from home, getting dark and cold, and you're stuck in fourth gear slipping the clutch to get back. The best part was going through NYC traffic this way at the end of it. Don't wanna do that again! Steve The Mule A17

Yesterday mine was feeling mushy with my steel tipped boots on. I pulled it off, sand blasted it. The weld was 80% broken. It's clear the KLR shift lever was engineered to bend or break at the weld before bending the shaft it's on. I welded it with some 7014 rod and repainted it. It's stronger then new now and possibly too strong. It's a very easy weld. You could take it to a local welder or even a muffler shop to get it welded. If you strip the paint first, the welding part takes about a minute to do.
