Any place that dirt can come in needs to be given a shot of compressed air. I m sure you will find dirt there. You could also give it a shot of Contact Cleaner to help break up any dirt buildup. I d try compressed air first before removing all the little pieces inside your cap. Blow it out and you should see lots of dirt. If this doesn t fix your problem, then you will have to disassemble your cap to clean out the check valves. Be careful not to loose any of the small springs or ball bearings there. I actually couldn't tell if it was sucking or blowing, but I have to assume it was sucking. Does anybody have an idea why it would suck like that? This really sucks. The tank was almost empty, as a matter of fact. I have had everything apart. Is there something obvious where I could have switched a hose or something to draw a constant vacuum on the tank? Thanks for thinking about this. -- Robert Wichert P.Eng. my gas tank sucks
My apologies to Mark. I see you said Carb Cleaner not Contact Cleaner. Some carb cleaners are safe for rubber, some are not. I have used PJ1 Contact, Carb & Brake cleaners for many years. They all work well as intended. PJ1 Contact and Carb cleaners are safe for rubber, where PJ1 Contact cleaner is also safe for painted surfaces and PJ1 Carb Cleaner is not. PJ1 Brake Cleaner is not safe for rubber or painted surfaces. You have to read the label to be sure the chemicals you use are safe for what you are using them on.

"Contact" cleaner.
For those with "OLD SCHOOL" Minds. DO NOT use Carb cleaner, or break parts cleaner.
There are Cleaners, like Contact Cleaner Or Sensor, Cleaner designed to Not HARM, The rubber ETC., ETC. seals.
All at your local auto parts store, Many at Walmart, ETC.
KY Jelly, Used as a Water based cleaner.
In Appliance repair service, We used KY Jelly a lot on plastic and Teflon, ETC parts,
(Many cloths Dryer wheel "bearings, are not metal & have Graphite coatings. & OIL's would Harm them.)

Back in the early 70's when record turntables were more common, a friend
told me that someone in the "know" told him that the best lubricant for
turntables was KY Jelly. I asked if he was sure that's what was said
because KY is water based. He was sure and couldn't be dissuaded. You
can guess the results. I believe there still sits an old Dual turntable
somewhere in his basement that not too long after cleaning and lubing
quit working properly.
This is not a comment on Marks use of KY as a cleaner but merely a
humorous aside that Marks' note made me remember.
