The clutch action of KLRs seems to vary quite a bit without much regard for cable routing, condition or manufacture. Mine got stiffer when I replaced a slightly balky oem cable with a new, freshly-lubed Terminator. OTOH, I installed a terminator on another guy's bike and it works like butter. I'm surprised that Paul Streeter can work his clutch all by himself, even with a brand new cable. An over-tightened lever pivot bolt can jam things up, but once that's out of the equation, and the cable is routed well, what's left? Springs? (Streeter's bike is of uncertain provenance, and might have heavy ones) Some quirk of adjustment? Something internal?

I installed an EBC kit on my '99. The springs are freekin' heavy! If I had to do it all over, I'd get the platres from EBC(way cheaper than OEM) and buy OEM springs... Thanks CA Stu

It's funny you say that. I've replaced many parts on my KLR, most (but not all) from riding it places it wasn't designed for. But (knock on wood) the original clutch cable is still working well at 33,000mi. Every couple oil changes, I use one of those little cable luber fittings that you stick the little straw into from a WD40 or chain lube can. I flush it with WD40 intil it runs out the bottom, then blow it out with air, then another squirt of WD40. So far so good. Actually, the clutch slips on my A15 if the motor's cold, so it looks like the cable might actually outlast the plates and springs. Devon

A few years ago I was on a trip and the clutch cable snapped, the little ball by the actuator (By left foot) came off. LUCKY I was in 2nd and a fire dept., was a block away. I used there tools (Hammer vise, grinder) and a small Nut, Smashed the nut on the cable, then ground it down until it fit in the slot. A day later we passed a KAW dealer, I tried to buy a new cable, (mine an 07) NOT IN STOCK (of course) after making several calls to other stores, it was suggested, Maybe!! the cable from an 2010 would work? As we looked at it we could not find any Difference, JUST THE PART NUMBERS (LAST 4), were different. Does anyone Know, is there any difference in the last 10 yrs????? Yes, that's one range hotter than the standard. With NGK plugs, lower number equals hotter plug.
