new mikuni performace carburetor for the klr650
You must have enlisted the help of the great sound engineer Dr. Loof
Lirpa. Did he use ultra high frequency sound waves to hyper vaporize the
fuel? Dr. Lirpa usually brings out new products just in time to appear
in the April issue of "Sound and Vision" magazine. I'm glad to see him
branching out in to carburetors. It's been rumored for years that he had
modified a Puch moped that is capable of speeds well beyond 100 mph
while achieving almost 150 miles per gallon.

Be great...if it wasn't a 2 stroke carb.
I've often wondered about a carb swap though, since the KLR650 uses the
same carb bore size as my CRF450X. Also, having had one of those KLR
style Keihin CV carbs on Suzuki before, I absolutely hated it. Worst
carb I've ever had in my life. The Keihin FCR on the other hadn has been
a great carb. Right now my 2009 KLR runs great, but if this carb ever
has issues like the Suzuki did, I may entertain a carb swap.

This Mikuni carb is used on all sorts of bikes. Two and four stroke. You
should compare the constant velocity carb (like your Keihin CVK) to a direct
pull carb like the Mikuni VM and you will see and feel the difference. Next
time you are at a Harley rally let me know so I can watch you discuss that
this carb is only for two strokes.

Hmmm, Interesting. I was under the belief that the single pull carbs
weren't used on modern big bore 4 strokes because the vacuum can hold
the carb open, hence the return/close pull of the second cable. My CR250
2 stroke has a carb similar to the single pull that's pictured.
As for the Harley meet comment, you may be a while waiting for my
answer, as I don't attend any Harley anythings. The dig on the Harley
guys might be worth the trip, but I doubt I'd make it out without
serious injury.
But then again, maybe my theory is correct, since the classic Harley
motor is by no means a "modern" engine.

Back in the day (60s & 70s) when motorcycles were making lots more
horsepower than they had brakes for, this may have been an issue on some
bikes (2 & 4 stroke) Yes that was the original thought that big thumpers
would develop lots of vacuum to stick open the slide, but I never heard of
any bike sticking the carb open because of vacuum. It was more like
sticking open because of a damaged throttle or cable or sucking in sand or
dirt sticking the slide. A stuck throttle is never a good thing. Today's
brakes are much better and as long as your throttle, cable and air filter
are in good shape, there is minimal chance of a throttle sticking open. I
think the twin throttle cable was first used when the EPA was cracking down
on all sorts of things and this idea was just one of many.
This Mikuni carb is The Performance Modification for Sportsters and other HD
models using carbs. Since the Sportster also comes with a Keihin CVK, the
Mikuni is a good fit for both the HD and the KLR. The reason you don't see
larger carbs like the FCR and others is that there is not enough room
because of the starter clearance to the float bowl. Accelerator pumps take
up room and there just isn't any on the KLR. Also the Mikuni is about 1/5
the cost compared to the FCR.
Most CR250s used a Keihin PE, PK or PW carb, which looks and operates
similar to the Mikuni but are slightly larger.

Fred, is there a comparable dyno graph with the stock carburetor?

Sorry, should have added that top speed is irrelevant to me but I like as much low end torque as I can get.

The Mikuni direct pull carburetor has no vacuum lag and so you will feel more power down low sooner than on the stock carburetor.

The dyno graph was an April Fools joke!
