depending on his average speeds, and type of riding, Mileage souds ok, and if Exhaust was plugged some causing it "issue's" it's very understandable he would have had POUR Mileage.

Just a new muffler but the bike I am almost positive has been way over
jetted by the PO, also it has a k&n air filter with the lid off the
airbox. The mileage has always been horrible since I bought it
(understandably w a huge jet and little to no back pressure) but I never
cared because it was such a blast to ride. now the mileage is improved as
well as power being more even and available across more of the rpm range.
My riding style varies wildly depending on the weather and my mood, hence
the wide MPG range.
Oh and stock head pipe. Plan to get the cherry bomb pipe when finances
allow.
The problem as I understand it was a severe LACK of back pressure with the
old supertrapp due to leaks, damage(lost core and endcap), etc coupled with
a huge jet, big air filter, open air box, and a WOT with appropriate ear to
ear grin half the time due to this being my first bike larger than 175cc,
leading to POOR fuel economy. With the back pressure, not only is it more
efficient overall, but due to having now some low end torque, I am not
having to use much RPM to get going from a dead-stop as compared to before.

Well, you can either spend about 400 bucks on a loud muffler that won't make your bike any faster, but will tickle your butt dyno, or spend twenty on a tractor muffler that will do about the same thing without pretending to be something it isn't. As for looks, nothing beats good old wear and tear.

Where does one get these tractor mufflers I often see references to? If
they bolt right up, I would have thought Id run into one on one of the many
klr parts sites.

Um, looks lovely. I was going to say this looks agricultural but I think that would be an insult to farmers.

The muffler itself doesn't look all bad, especially considering the
price. It also weighs a heck of a lot less than the stock unit.
But man, those welds look horrible! Dang. I get upset when mine don't
look like a roll of dimes. Part of the problem is that you can't weld
galvanized unless you first grind off the coating. Second, you should
never use a stick welder on something like that.
I'd bet that it could be done, rather well, and hold up ok if it was
done right. The pic further down with the turned-down tip looks pretty
good. Might even be able to get a chrome/stainless tip for it.

re./ trans woes
I'm the same on the gaskets and have some in stock. May have time to get out to the shop and take the clutch side off this afternoon. Thanks for all the replys, love it.
All fit into what I was thinking even before I got home with it in the trailer. Had seen that stuff years back when I pulled the cover off to clean the oil pick up screen and check for missing Dohicky parts. LOL!
