How old is the battery? With battery disconnected what is the voltage? When batteries get past the 3 year mark all electrical trouble shooting ends until they are replaced in my book. Bad batteries do lot of strange things.

+1. I've had a Honda Transalp battery with dead cell drive me crazy on one occasion and a loose terminal connection cause all manner of weirdness with my former DL1000. Both were fixed instantly with a new battery or a tightened connection. If you have an accomodating bike shop, maybe they can "loan" you a known "good" battery (used) to test with. Mine did and I rode the 'alp over there to buy a new battery & return their old one. eddie

I'm with Jeff on a bad connection thing. Check your fuses for corrosion, plug in connectors for same, wires for possible seperation and back connection on the battery , etc. Sounds like a problem I had with mine early this year which was a bad fuse connection, not the fuse. Replace both fuse connection with a blade fuse set up and no problems since.

To my chagrin, it's the battery. It's not holding a charge. I'm surprised since it's only two years old. Maybe the time I completely drained it by accidentally leaving the bike in park mode for a week didn't help. The ohm readings I got on the starter is what threw me. I didn't expect an open reading on the coil side. And the voltage reading of 10.5 after I hooked it back up again made it suspect. Just to make sure, with battery charger on it and the wire to the starter relay disconnected as Jeff suggested. Key on, pressed starter button...click! The lights worked as well. Thanks all for your responses! Have a fun, safe summer! Dave

Full drain equals bad for these batteries. Re the ohms - make sure you haven t blown the fuse in the multi-meter also some relays have diodes reverse orientation across the coil to suppress transient spikes so check resistance both ways (reverse leads). -----Original Message----- From: daveygwhiz Sent: Friday, June 29, 2012 10:20 AM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: starter relay To my chagrin, it's the battery. It was a Yuasa "maintenance free" battery that I drained. The multi-meter is good. I'll double check the starter relay with reversed polarity as you suggest. I'm going with an Interstate AGM this time around. Dave

Post by mark ward » Sat Jun 30, 2012 9:27 am

I was At Walmart and seen an old item that aloows you to play CD's in a Cassette player. My BMW K1200lt is an 01 so Ipod plug in, but it does have 6CD changer AND A CASSETTE player. So for $6. I got the "cassette with a wire&plug attached that allows me to use the Ipod on the bike now. Use it in your old truck etc. ALSO. I can not control songs etc., But can still use the Vollume control on the bike. YES I KNOW Music is distrackting to some, But on LONG lonly highways, and late at night it helps keep me alert, not zoning out, watching the white lines go by.
