Try the tool dept of your local Sears store...............or pull over the next SnapOn, Mac or Cornwell truck that you see. You're local NAPA or other auto parts emporium may have them as well. Buddy bseifert71@...

my A14 that I call the "Grasshopper" I am also going to "do the Doo", and have ordered parts from Arrowhead. I figure I'll also check the oil screen while I'm in there. I have looked around for a 1/4" torque wrench, but have come up empty handed so far. Does anybody have a good source, or any ideas on where I might look?

Wow Sleeping Bear.... they still got the dune buddy rides ? Many moons ago can remember going there with the family, mostly being challenged to see who could run down the dunes the fastest, but being dumb kids did'nt take notice to having the get back to the top... Can still hear my since past uncle laughing from the top of the dune. Oh in keeping from becoming a umm NKLR might try seeing a local auto parts that may rent/loan them out or perhaps a tool rental, unless you are willing to buy, then I do not know, Sears maybe if they actually have anything in the local store. John, Not sure why you want/need a 1/4" drive torque wrench (the ones I've seen only go up to 60 in/lbs and the cam caps are torqued to 104 in/lbs.) I just did two complete valve adjusts on a couple of new 2006 KLRs at their 500 mile service, and I used my Craftsman, 3/8" drive in/lb clicker type torque wrench and it worked well. The right intake cam cap does not have enough clearance to use the wrench directly, so I had to put a right-angle adaptor on the wrench for that cap, but that is often the case with any torque job. Hi Hugh! There are 1/4" drive torque wrenches that go up to 200 in- lbs. Mine's an SK brand, but I'm sure there are others. One of those, combined with some 1/4" extension bars, lets you get directly on all the cam caps and valve cover bolts. I'm building my riding tool kit and wondering if the 1/4" torque rachet(forward and reverse) could replace the 3/8" drive ratchet. Also, is there anywhere you can think of that you can't use a socket and must have a box or open end? Will a crescent work in those cases? (I'm trying to avoid a full set of combos.) My axle nuts are covered with the tire iron combo. (I should have been taking notes during my past upgrades :( Dave --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Blake Sobiloff wrote:

SNIP SNIP Absolutely NOT. Torque wrenchs are not an appropriate substitute for a ratchet -- trying to use a torque wrench as a ratchet will leave you with a broken torque wrench. Hugh

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Dave, Just off the top of my head I think it would be pretty hard to adjust the chain using sockets. I like 12mm and 14mm combo wrenches for this task. I'm also not sure how well sockets would work on battery terminals depending on the battery you're using. Hi all, I just finished a valve adjustment yesterday among other things on my 04 KLR and also used my 3/8 torque wrench without needing any adapters..perhaps on of the real mechanics out there could confirm or correct something I thought I remember being told years ago, that being if you use any type of adapter on a torque wrench other then a straight extension it could give you a false torque reading because of the joint binding....Now I'll have to break down and humble myself and ask one of the resident engineers here a question confirming what they have suspected all along that us elect. people don't know everything.... :-)....have a great day..Greg ...ps..supposed to be sunny and 27*C in NS tomorrow so looking like a long night after work tonight doing what I should have done last winter...tire...brakes...ss brake line the list goes on...

The last thing you want is a tool you need to baby. Carry a 1/4" with a 3/8" adapter and a cheater bar if you absolutely must reduce the size of your toolkit. I'd stick with 3/8" ratchet *and* combo wrenches of the 8,10,12,13,14,15,17mm sizes, sockets of the same, an extension, a set of 3/8" allen head drivers, combo screwdriver, vise-grips/knipex, spark plug wrench, flashlight, spare nuts and bolts and the like. Believe me, you won't be worrying about a carrying a couple of extra wrenches when you break down, at night, in the rain, far from home and need them. --- Mine is a Proto and I really like it. Picked it up at my local Grainger, but they also sell online. Gotta have an account though, I believe.
