Gentlemen, I own a 2008 "oil burner" apparently and am looking for general info on the 685 modification. Is there a good source for this info? The little I've read so far seems to indcate this is a positive upgrade and generally fixes the oil issue. ~~~~I beleive I read and viewed pictures of that upgrade over on the KLR World forums. Just google if you're not familiar with that KLR 650 internet resource. You will have to register to view or post anything. The owner (Hondo) does that to keep spammers out. BTW, that forum hosts an incredible amount of KLR maint and how to pictorials. Go on over there and take a look around One other matter...after you finish the install and you are ready to do the break in. follow the mototuneman's break in procedure to the letter. Best engine break procedure available IMNSHO I used this procedure to break in my 08' KLR 650 back in late 07' and never had oil burning issues. Google mototuneman Jake Reddick Fla. I may not agree with what you say... but if you say it with fewer words I'll try harder... http://www.shakinjake.blogspot.com/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/26137108@N04

Not necessarily. A friend put the 685 on his and it still burns oil. Seems like he said a quart every 1000 miles.  He is fixing to pull it apart again. He is very experienced rebuilding engines so I don't think his work is the problem. Seems like he said this is at running it at 85 mph for long distances. Criswell

I don't think the KLR was ever designed to run at 85 mph for long distances........   JM2C   Bob 09     CC: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com To: bobkochen@... From: roncriswell@... 685 kit

Post by roncriswell@sbcglobal.net » Mon Nov 22, 2010 8:40 am

I run mine at 5200-5300 rpm all the time and for hours on end on the hwy with no noticeable oil use between changes. Mine did start smoking at 23,000 miles and a friend did a top end job. No smoke or oil use (noticeable) since. I am at 53,000 now. Criswell Criswell

Robert, I'll suggest the 685 does generally stop oil use issues. I think the exceptions are just that, exceptions. And I would question the machining and or assembly in every one of the two or three exceptions I've heard about. My KLR685 doesn't use oil. I did my own cylinder boring and had a very good friend with thousands of cylinder honings under his belt do my final sizing for piston to cylinder fit. We followed the directions from Schnitz. I think you could find more info at www.klr650.net and use the search function near the top to search for 685. Any info you see about the 685 from wymanwinn can be held as gospel. He's maybe done the most 685 kits of anyone in the world. I thinks he's down to doing one in less than 3 hours now. The big difference I can tell on my KLR when changing from the 650 to 685 is it went from lawnmower smooth to sewing machine smooth. It was that noticeable to me. There is a bit more power but not enough to shout about in my opinion. As a side note... If I was installing a 685 kit I would add a ThermoBob at the same time. You can find more about the ThermoBob at www.klr650.net too. Use the search function.
