Ron had mine to 107 indicated and still rising when I ran out of room. Maybe
110-113 mph. Then comes the 10 per cent speedo error. TC

I am at least as ignorant as the average dolt, maybe even the above
average dolt, but I don't see how drilling out the slide hole to 1/8
of an inch effects top speed or gas mileage.
I was led to believe that this is a vacuum feed port that causes the
slide to respond quicker to throttle openings, allowing the bike to
rev up quicker. It effects neither total airflow, nor total fuel
flow through any of the jets or ports. It simply allows the venturi
vacuum to have a greater effect on pulling up the slide, overcoming
the slide spring that is constantly pushing down on the slide.
I can see if in riding the bike, the rider has a greater tendency to
ride in WFO mode. That would effect the mileage. But then riding WFO
always wrecks your gas mileage.
Can somedoby take my dumbazz to school?
Inquiring minds want to know, and so do I.
Thanks,
CA Mark

I'm just the average dolt myself. I have never understood how
drilling the slide hole will effect gas milage. I can see gas milage
dropping if I'm jerkiing the throttle around to take advantage of the
quicker response.
Cruising steady would not have a dropping effect.

Drilling out the slide is not the only change guys make during a
Dynojet or other carb kit installation. The larger slide hole does
allow the slide to move more quickly, giving better response. But it
is the rejettting and other intake mods that affect the top speed. On
the long straight section of road I use for tuning I found that I
could get up to 100 mph indicated stock, while getting about 60 mpg
average. After Dynojet kit and K&N filter was installed and airbox
lid was removed, bike got up to 105 indicated and about 52 mpg on
the same roads, same driving style. The top-end accelleration was
noticably improved as well, giving me better high-gear passing over
70 mph. Warmup time was also reduced. You pays your money and takes
your choice.

On Sunday, Thor, Richard and I went out for a little ride down in Southern Maryland along the Potomac river (rt. 224, if you're interested) and I ran WFO down one long desolate stretch of road that I use for testing top speeds. I hit 95mph indicated and the last time I had checked my speedo with GPS it was +5-7mph off at 75mph, so that might have been a little over 100mph. This was with K270's, a twinair filter, DJ kit (e-clip second notch from top), LPD, 15/43 gearing and modified air box. I weigh 240lbs and am 6'4" though at that point I was laying on the tank. Aerodynamics is probably the biggest factor at the 100mph+ speeds. With barkbuster flags, a high fender and lower fork leg guards there is a lot to push through the air with only 35HP. I very rarely need that kind of speed, as long as I can accelerate upto 80mph reasonable quickly, I am safe to merge on our miserable freeways around here. Even my Concours with 85+HP will only hit 130mph indicated. Z DC A5X A12X> Hey Fellas, I'm just curious, what the fastest you guys have gone on > the KLR650? I think you understand it just fine. One of the reasons you get lower mileage with a Mikuni carb is the INSTANT throttle response really encourages riding like a jackass. I'm putting the stock carb, with stock jetting back on the bike. Devon> I have never understood how > drilling the slide hole will effect gas milage. FWIW, I think I just barely started to catch up to you before you
slowed down. My speedometer was somewhere in the 92-93MPH range. My
bike's dead stock from a performance point of view (and not far off any
other way). On the way home up I-95, I confirmed a couple of times that
I'd need a long, straight _downhill_ to even think of getting my bike
above 100MPH indicated; I don't know how far my speedo's off, nor which
way.
What a nicely banked set of on-ramps you have by your place, by the
way. Kinda caught me by surprise after the slow street riding to
that point... if I tried that around here I'd probably end up hitting
a 2-foot pothole or the rear end of some bozo in a K-car parked at a
Yield sign. So that was the bit of fast riding I remember from
Sunday just because, well, I'd love to have some nice twisty ramps
like that here.

Years ago on the A-1,was drafting a 110mph Peterbuilt (a few times I
thought I could pass him) stepping out of the draft was like pulling a rip
cord.
With riderat 260 lbs, med. load of gear and kissing the tank anything around
100 would be good.
With the winds here in Oklahoma you will need someone to help pull the seat
cover out of your ass !!
Have a safe day riders

Hi , with a 16 tooth front sprocket and stock everything except a k+n
air filter. All I could get up to was 90 mph and 87 mph on the GPS. Is
that it????? and it didn`t want to rev much higher than 6,200 rpm`s in
top gear.Revs higher in other gears. Bike runs great at all speeds and I
don`t really want to go faster than 80 mph on this bike anyway. Just
thought it would have a higher top speed .
