#1 Magnetic Drain Plug. ... Catastophic Engine Failure Paranoia
#2 Battery changed to AGM sealed type . Too lazy to add water every week.
#3 Brakes upgraded with SS braided lines . You can always stop faster.
#4 Dohickey / actually the spring is the culprit here.

Re: item #1.
A model airplane building motorcycle mechanic gave me a collar
button-sized, super strong magnet. It's shiny metallic and literally not
much thicker than a dime.
I stuck it in the recessed head of the OEM oil drain bolt. It was free and
I had it, so.....

I can atest that the plastic shovel KHI installed on my KLR can take one heck of a beating and continue on.
Have seen/felt/heard fist sized stones bounce off that shovel to the point I stopped and checked it only to find a scratch on it.
Just figured I would point that out.

If anyone does this, please note:
You have to cut the recessed bolt bosses off completely and oversize the holes you create for the bottom bosses to protrude through.
When you are cutting, sanding the OEM skid plate wear gloves and safety glasses as the material of construction is glass reinforced plastic.

Eddie, That sounds like a thrifty mod. How well does this work for you? Where are the shavings and metalic grit mostly collected/located when you pull the drain plug? Took me a moment to visualize this magnet-- then I wondered about how far into the case the drain-plug-bolt would go. If the bolt thread fully enters the case and inot dwell oil reservoir--which I belive that it would--there would be metal shavings in the bolt's thread as you pulled the drain plug to drain the oil. Which leads to a couple of questions: What are those captive shavings going to do as the plug is unthreaded? Contaminate the case threads? perhaps. Be left clinging to the case? I'm not sure, as I have never seen the inside of a KLR engine case--but other applications--that the oil drain plug protrudes into the dwell oil, thus making the idea that an entire magantized bolt rather than a 'tip' is less than ideal. revmaaatin.> > Re: item #1. > A model airplane building motorcycle mechanic gave me a collar > button-sized, super strong magnet. Would the shavings in the engine not be mostly aluminium?

Case-mostly aluminium (Brit spelling)
Bearings-not (Yank colloquialism)

I wish I'd thought of that before sending that comment.
Happy Thanksgiving.
