Save a few sets of the rubber grommets from stock filter changes; you'll need these for the K&P stainless steel filter. The filter may be "lifetime", but the grommets, which don't come with the K&P, are most certainly not. I'm thinking of getting a second one to make oil changes quick and easy, enabling me to clean and inspect the changed out filter at leisure (also as a back-up in case of damage to one). Get the magnetized oil drain bolt while you're at it; it helps you track conditions inside. Steve "The Mule" A14

Bob....I just put a NAPA Gold filter in a couple of weeks ago. The code on it was #4951. The only thing on the box is "made in canada", no other clues that I can see. JD A14 "Godzilla" DF/W, Tx. >>>>

FWIW: Two of the K&P filters cost about US$150.00. For 150 bucks you can buy around 30 paper filters that come WITH grommets and o-rings. 30 filters is several lifetimes supply. Also, you don't have to buy and dispose of cleaning solvent. Just a thought. Thanks. Bob Kaub

The mfgr's code is usually stamped on the filter itself, on one of the metal end caps. Sometimes its paint stamped on the metal (like a rubber stamp) and sometimes its stamped into the metal itself. BTW: I just ordered a #4951 filter from the local NAPA store. They won't have until Monday and it will cost US$5.24 plus 8% sales tax. Thanks. Bob Kaub

I certainly didn't buy a stainless filter for the economics. I bought it for the convenience of never having to go hunt for a stupid over-priced paper filter every time I want to change the oil. The first time you try to change oil "on the road", it more than "pays" for itself! As for the solvent, I use the same solvent I cleaned the oil filter with to clean the air filter afterwards, which I have to buy and dispose of anyway. Just my .02

I was tempted to buy the reusable filter, but on a long trip it's easier to carry new spares than to clean a reusable unit. Besides, I am already wasting time cleaning the K&N at the same time. Fireball

I like the Emgo 10-30000. Last I checked, Fred had them for $3.49. Parts411.com sells them, too. Their part number is M300-MD and they don't list the KLR on their page. Their shipping calc gets it wrong so you migfht have to call the order in. I've never tried this company. Fred's site is at http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com I *have* ordered from him and the service and speed are excellent. RM

I bought an oil filter from the dealer for my bike last summer. My bike is a sherpa and they sold me one for the klr650. I found this out in the middle of an oil change (huh, there not the same size?) So, does anyone want to buy it or trade something? Just thought I would check here before ebay. k&n powersports performance gold oil filter kn-123 Hunter
