All the " WiseAsses " I know, have the Bob installed AND since this is America where good and great ideas and products are rewarded, they bought it directly from Bill Watson, the man came up with it he is entitled to reap the rewards of his idea ,meaning fork out $115.00 ,you'll be glad you did.
Now, as far as installing it on over 40k bikes that would be up to Bill to give you some technical info.

I don't consider myself a 'wiseass', although my wife will disagree . . .
it's just the 'Engineering Personality' - plus a dash of 'CHEAP SOB'.
I very much understand the need for a rapid warm-up in the Northern Tier
states. I live in Southeastern PA and fortunately don't experience that
deep, or long, a 'cold soak'. The mention of '. . . over 40K bikes ' caught
my attention.
From a purely engineering standpoint, any mechanism that has a 'steady
state' of operation is going to work more efficiently, and have less wear,
then one that continuously 'cycles'. This was my concern, plus the thermal
shock to the small mass {relatively speaking !!} of the cylinder. Plus my
main consideration is for cooling during the 'warmer months'.
I've known about the 'Thermo-Bob' mechanism {I think it was the 'MarkNet'
site that had an extensive review and 'photo essay' on installation} - but
the site noted here was GREAT !!
Happily, my bike is just at the beginning of it's life . . it is an
IMMACULATE 2003 - 'showroom condition' with a LOT of PRACTICAL extras
already installed {'doohicky', off-road exhaust, Stainless brake line, - all
the 'usual suspects'}, with less then 5K on it - at an absolute STEAL of a
price. I haven't ridden for about 30 years, but I couldn't pass this up !! I
got it in December, so all I could really do was add some fuel stabilizer to
the gas and run the carb dry, and remove the battery {sealed AGM !!} for
indoor storage.
I'm scheduled for the 'Safety Class' in April. Hopefully it will be warm
enough before that to do all the Preventative Maintenance . . . Change ALL
the fluids, add a magnetic drain plug, metal oil cap{?}, check, tighten, &
adjust EVERYTHING, . . .and install a 'Thermo-Bob' !!
Being a 'Cheap SOB' means I want this machine to last FOREVER !!
Regards & Thanks,
Ron Magen

I didnt really realize how benificial it was untill I installed it.
Ive had it for over 10K now W/O problems.

Actually the Thermo-Bob should increase engine life by reducing
cylinder bore taper which is caused mainly by temperature
fluctuations. Also thermodynamic efficiency should improve resulting
in a slight improvement in fuel mileage. The book "Power Secrets" by
Smokey Yunic covers a lot on this subject.

We are not talking about a knockoff here. He asked if somebody purchased something that they then did not use. I don't think Bob wants people to buy this thing and just leave it in the box, he wants them to live a proper life on a KLR. -- Doug Herr doug@... Big deal. Just because they spent the money, doesn't mean the bike is going to last longer.

wtb thermo-bob for my 2000 klr
Hi Jim, I'm not really an engine guy either but industrial electronics in one of my fields so the way I would compare the ThermoBob, which I have installed to the electronics field would be as follows. A lot of the PLC's, drives etc I woke on are in very hot enviroments so cabinet cooling is a must, but if you try to over cool on hot humid days you wind up with condensation on the circuit boards, to me the equal of your KLR engine not getting up to temp on cold days, you get condensation in the oil which shows up at it's extreme as a milky froth. The ThermoBob allows your motor to quickly warm to operating temperature.
The other benefit of the ThermoBob is that once your motor warms to operating temp it stays in my experience stable pretty much with in a needle's width on the temp gauge thus preventing thermal shock when the thermostat opens and floods the motor with greatly cooled anti-freeze on a cold day. Excessive heat and electronics definitely can be a bad mix but in my experience where stuff is expected to work in pretty extreme temperatures hot/cool cycles seems to be at least as bad as too much heat so you try to control the temperature at a good stable temperature.
If you have a circuit board you suspect is having problems because of local overheating, a bad component, bad solder joint, etc you probably like me hit it with a shot of cold spray on the suspect components to see if the problem disappears. In some cases the heat has distorted parts enough that a good connection is no longer there but a shot of cold spray restores that connection long enough to guide you to the problem....have a great day....Greg

I believe from what I read that low heat can cause engine issues of some type? I have read the overview of the product but it's not clear to me why you would want the engine to be at a constant (higher) temperature than what was originally designed by the mfg? Can anyone explain, in no engine expert terms why you would need this and how it would extend the life of some parts of the engine? I'll compare it to the several millions of liquid-cooled auto and motorcycle engines that have no such device, but have all enjoyed great longevity in the modern era. I laugh at the rocket science that goes on in many areas concerning the KLR. The money is better used toward the suspension, luggage or a GPS rather than some superfluous device that *may* (no clinical studies done, mind you) extend the life of an already durable engine, IMO. BTW, if you're afraid of thermal shock, don't ever take it across a creek, or even through a mud puddle or thunderstorm. Nearly all of them have a radiator bypass, and have for
many years. Some modern motorcycle engines do too.

I guess you haven't looked at an automotive engine for a looong time....> The money is better used toward the suspension, > luggage or a GPS rather than some superfluous > device that *may* (no clinical studies done, mind > you) extend the life of an already durable > engine, IMO. > > BTW, if you're afraid of thermal shock, don't > ever take it across a creek, or even through a > mud puddle or thunderstorm. > Mark >
